Andrew Sullivan gives some context for Zell Miller:
Andrew Sullivan summons up his righteous indignation:

Miller's address will, I think, go down as a critical moment in this campaign, and maybe in the history of the Republican party. I kept thinking of the contrast with the Democrats' keynote speaker, Barack Obama, a post-racial, smiling, expansive young American, speaking about national unity and uplift.

Then you see Zell Miller, his face rigid with anger, his eyes blazing with years of frustration as his Dixiecrat vision became slowly eclipsed among the Democrats.

Remember who this man is: once a proud supporter of racial segregation, a man who lambasted LBJ for selling his soul to the negroes. His speech tonight was in this vein, a classic Dixiecrat speech, jammed with bald lies, straw men, and hateful rhetoric. As an immigrant to this country and as someone who has been to many Southern states and enjoyed astonishing hospitality and warmth and sophistication, I long dismissed some of the Northern stereotypes about the South. But Miller did his best to revive them. The man's speech was not merely crude; it added whole universes to the word crude. . . .

Last night was therefore a revealing night for me. I watched a Democrat convince me that I could never be a Republican. If they wheel out lying, angry bigots like this as their keynote, I'll take Obama. Any day."

Stay safe, Heidi and family. And... I thought Andrew Sullivan already WAS a Republican? Or is the RNC scaring him off?? I keep wondering what kind of cognitive dissonance it takes to be a gay Republican -- especially when the GOP has people like that Drew woman (forgot her first name) talking about gays the way she did. UGH/

Yes, Ole Zell voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act. How dare 'they' think they're as good as us! Moron. I don't have the predilection, like some GOP, to attack him personally, but he is just wrong on so many things it's not even worth worrying about even countering his blabbering.

Wonder how all these speeches this week will play? The GOP certainly seems to be a cowardly group. Don't they know that GWB is running against John Kerry and not Osama bin Laden? For the first three nights, they have blasted us with 'their' vision of a cowering, frightened people...us. Almost everything they discussed was the idea that we need one individual in the White House or else the rest of the country will relax and we will be attacked. Wait. Wasn't John Kerry the warrior of the two? They pretty much showed their hand that all GWB has to run on is the War on Terror. Unfortunately, he even screwed that up by invading Iraq therefore create more terrorist recruits and leaving bin Laden still running free in Afghanistan.

What's is the point of a multi-milionaire griping about economic 'girly-men' when there are more people in poverty, more people without health insurance, and more people out of work than when his buddy came into office? Not a wise play there Ahhhhhnold.

Finally, I love the showcase night at the GOP where they trot out the best people of color in there party. It almost seems that 25% of the GOP is black...until you realize that there's < 3% blacks in the GOP.

Ahh, Zell Miller. He reminds me of Strom Thurmond, who was first a Democrat but then actually switched over to the Republican Party to support Goldwater's campaign.

Why doesn't Zell just leave the party already? *shakes head*

Signing off, V.M. Bell
