As I understand it, after reading up on it overnight (via sidekick, during the blackout), the site had all the episodes of the show (and possibly the movie, but that's unclear) available for download in ASF and DIVX formats - someone on slashdot checked the Wayback Machine - and that would seem to be why the feds went after him. It would be like FictionAlley having PS/SS in book form, the CoS movie and deleted scenes, and, say, OotP as read by Stephen Fry, all available for download.

So while I don't think complacency about either copyright issues or the overuse of the Patriot act are good ideas now, or at any time, I also don't think that this situation should instill paranoia among anyone who doesn't have the actual source material available for download - and, btw, per the Arriba case from 2002, low or medium resolution images don't run afoul of the copyright law as long as their used for news reporting, discussion or in a transformative sense (ie thumbnail-sized icons).

Did Stephen Fry really do the audio version of OoTP???? I might get it from the Library, just for him...

He did all the audio versions, in the UK (but you can also order them from Canada - they're cheaper that way).

How does the Patriot Act even come into this? I thought it was a straight MPAA copyright infringement issue, but the MPAA used its clout to get the govt to bring criminal instead of (or in addition to) civil charges. Presumably for simple felony grand larceny or something. And the FBI came into it because it's the Internet and therefore interstate.

Supposedly, they used the patriot act to get financial information from the isp.

The way I understand it (as explained by someone who uses the site much more than I do), upon complaint the episode downloads were removed quite a while ago. So I'm still not entirely sure why the FBI is wasting their time but thanks for a little bit of clarification. :)
