"Madam, without you, life was like a broken pencil...it was pointless."

Melissa just posted on TLC that Miranda Richardson is set to play Rita Skeeter.

I am just over the moon with this announcement - I adore her completely and think she's absolutely perfect for the role, mostly because she does Evil Vampy Bitch better than anyone (except possibly Joanna Lumley, and she'd probably be better as Narcissa, who I'm not sure is even going to be in the film anyway, alas).

Oh, now I need to go watch me some Blackadder. And oh, it is just such a pity that any interaction she has with Lucius is offscreen.

(On a related note, if this brings any of the younger fans to see The Crying Game in the way that Cuaron's directing may've led some of them to see Y Tu Mama, I will laugh at the anti-smut crusaders. Oh yes, I will.)

The Crying Game didn't hold my attention, but I liked the parts with her in them. I already knew The Big Secret, though... Curse you, Onion!

Name sounds familiar but can't place her. What else has she done besides Crying Game?

Blackadder, Sleepy Hollow, the US miniseries version of Merlin, Chicken Run and Enchanted April, among other things.

Was she Mab in the "Merlin" series? I've seen that. Wouldn't be able to pick her out in Chicken Run, though. ;-)

I think so - I didn't watch it, though...

Don't know about Merlin, but thanks to Chicken Run having been on TV out here last weekend, I can tell you that Richardson was the voice of Mrs Tweedy.

She also played Virginia Woolf's sister (Veronica?) in The Hours, and was in the remake of The Parent Trap that was done a while ago now.

HAHA I haven't seen The Crying Game or Y Tu Mama Tambien. Am so woefully behind on things.

But, I'm also over 18 so I guess it really wouldn't matter if I DID see them, eh? :D

Ooh, fabulous! You're right, her Evil Vampy Bitch is just so good... I can just see her in those glasses!

I foresee some season two Blackadder re-watching in my future, too... *g*

Aaaaaand.... here she is, in fact! I have a couple Storyteller icons of her. :) I've definitely been squeeing over this news... how cool.

(She was in that series in the "The Three Ravens" episode; Michael Gambon played the Storyteller in the Greek Myths episodes, and John Hurt played the Storteller in the rest of the series. So we're doing pretty well for cast crossover here, heh.)

...er, Storyteller, not Storteller.

And this is mostly a GIP to get the other icon posted. :)

Whoa. I never imagined her for the role (but I haven't really thought about Rita Skeeter, really), but I do like her. Have not seen her as an Evil Vampy Bitch, but I'm sure she'll be really cool.

She was also in "Blow Dry" with none other than our beloved Alan Rickman. Well, my beloved, at any rate. ::snerk::

What marvelous news! That's an inspired choice.

Nope, that was Natasha Richardson, not Miranda. :-)

Oh woe. Richardson would have been a really good Bellatrix. Lumley is too old to play Narcissa, she is two years short of her sixtieth birthday. She would have been a brilliant Rita though, but maybe that's just the casual Absolutely Fabulous viewer speaking.

As for the Crying Game.... you, know the big surprise twist would be a lot more surprising if the Jaye Davidson's Academy Award nomination didn't totally give it away.

Yaaay Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter! Brilliant choice. But does she have mannish hands??;) Oh never mind. I was sort of hoping for Eddie Izzard in full regalia... at least we know he'd have mannish hands. Just kidding. Miranda will be one rockin' Rita.

Hee! I wanted Alan Cumming, but Eddie'd rock too. *g*

Weirdly enough I thought of Richardson for Umbridge- not physically, but the "girlish voice" thing made me think of Blackadder.

Glad she'll be in the film, though.

I wanted to see Y Tu Mama Tambien before I had any idea Cuaron was going to direct PoA.

... How old does one have to be to rent it from Blockbuster?
