From Slashdot:
Reader marklyon writes "Third party developers have stepped in with utilities that enhance and improve GMail. One utility, Mbox
& Maildir to Gmail Loader
allows users to upload their existing email to
their GMail account. Another, POP
Goes the GMail
, offers the ability to access your GMail account with any POP
mail reader, giving users the ability to permanently archive messages. GTray
lives in your taskbar and alerts you to incoming messages. Other, more
general programs, allow you to forward your Hotmail
or Yahoo! Mail messages to your
new GMail account. The question that remains, however, is whether Google will
work with or against third party developers in GMail's future."

Has anyone tried any of these yet? Are they good? Useful? Spyware-infected?

The first one is relevant if you want to transfer existing mail to gmail. Note that you will need some technical knowledge (concerning smtp and your isp) and also, possibly, plenty of time (default of two seconds per message to be transfered). This literally sends each message from a locally stored mailbox (in a specific format) to you gmail account. Does mess up folder display time on mail.

The second allows you to treat the gmail account as if it were a traditional pop account. This means that something runs on the local machine and acts as a pop server for the local machine, while getting the messages from the gmail account.

The third is suffering from the /. effect and I cannot get to it to look at it. Seemingly it will provide a mail alert when new messages hit your gmail account. As gmail does automatic refreshing (if open) then I am not sure I see the relevance of this.

The fourth one does what is says. If it gets people off of hotmail then good, Good, GOOD!

The last one is a perl script. If that means nothing it will be of no use to you.

As to spyware I have no idea and have tested none.

I have a gmail account and the only thing I use it for is yahoogroups. My personal items will forever and always go to my personal account.

I tried Gtray and ... meh. I thought it would be like the way Yahoo Messenger works, by popping up a little icon when you have a new message, but it isn't. You have to set an interval for it to check for new messages... which annoyed me. Meh.

I looked at Pop Goes the Gmail but didn't feel like bothering.

My favorite is Gmail Swap for those folks still in need of an address.

This is vaguely relevant, but--

Have you been able to log into Gmail on your sidekick internet browser? I can't even view the login box thinger on the main gmail page and was wondering if others with sidekicks were able to.

I can't, and I think it's because of the java. Ie put in a bug request about it; will you, too?

Certainly. It's irritating not being able to access Gmail through the sidekick. And even Yahoo!'s new upgrade isn't so great on the sidekick, since I'm unable to click 'Reply' when an email message is open.

Hm, the bit about uploading email sounds promising. I'd like to upload whatever HP4GU messages I have, and hopefully, they'd be easier to search.
