I'd say 'hated' too strong; I was disappointed in PoA more than anything. And no, it wasn't specifically because of the casting, although that irked me -- for all the background beauty, the æsthetics of the foreground were annoyingly off-kilter. And the intricate story I love felt rushed and distorted.

I feel that 'hate' is too strong of a word, too. Disapointed fit what I feel. Let down, as well.

Something about it wasn't right for me. I'm going to see it again so I can form a proper/stronger opinion.

Word. The filming was more 'art house', but I actually had no problem with PS and CoS' camera style.

Uhm... most of us haven't even had a chance to watch POA yet. It doesn't come out in Denmark for another two weeks.

For the rest, however, I read at least through PoA before they even *cast* the first HP movie.

I both love and hate PoA the movie. I loved the way it looked, the acting and the special effects. I hated how they portrayed the story. Too many vital parts were left out and nothing that makes PoA into such an amazing story was explained in the movie. So yes, that was a hug disappointment.

I have read HP, before the first movie was even done, and I did not love the PoA movie, but I can't say I hated it, either. I expected the worst from Cuaron *herk* anyway, and thus was not even that disappointed. He killed the plot, but Sirius as well as the appearance of the movie made me happy.

POA movie opinion

I think I already commented on this in some forum or another. Then again, I may have passed off as partially comatose. Ungh.

First HP experience, the first HP movie. Second HP experience, the second movie. Knew nothing about the books. I enjoyed both movies and they also make good background movies.

About 4-5 months after getting into the HP fandom because of the movies, I did the audio book route. Hm, I'd say POA was my favorite book. The movie rendition was aesthetically and nicely edited from a visual standpoint but will be a bitch to incorporate into fan vids when the previous movies are included.

However, the whole 'faithful to the spirit' got a bit lost along the way. Part of why POA fascinated me was how it bridged time 'periods' and I think one of the strongest moments was the Prongs=James connection.

Fans could connect dots because they know the information in advance (just as JKR thought fans would automatically assume Harry took his cloak back before OOTP and didn't need to explain) but it's not quite the same thing for others.

Some wondered why I delayed familiarizing myself with the books... Sometimes, naivete can have its advantages. Other times, stupidity can be painful to see.

My first HP exposure was before CoS was even published, and I think that this time my expectations were just too high.

It is better than the last two, and I think I heard so many good things about it that I thought it would be *my* film, but it just wasn't. I wanted Wonderwoman! Hermione to be the nervous wreck! Hermione that I had imagined. I wanted more Snape, more of the original dialogue. Just more of the magic of the book I suppose.

I hope that I'll enjoy my second viewing more, and just look at the good parts, of which I know there were many.

My first HP exposure was through either PS/SS or CoS

Book or movie? I'm a bit confused here..

Anyway, I only saw PS because I was working at a huge cinema at that time and got free tickets. I forgot most of it though (didn't even see it in its English original version AFAIR), and only started to read the books in the middle of November of 2002 (haha. I still have the bill somewhere..).

However, the first book I read was PoA (and I only got it because they had one copy which was a bit damaged and therefore cheaper than any of the other books), the 2nd was GoF, then came PS, and CoS I finished just the night before I went to see the film at the cinema.

Oh. And about PoA: The Movie: I like it. I like it better now that I have seen it a 2nd time (I only got to see the dubbed version at the preview I went to), but there's still a lot to criticise about it. Yeah, actually, it's so much (and hey, I do like it, I'm just *very* critical of most things ;)) that I'll have to write a loooong, long and detailed post in my own journal about it. And when I say detailed, I mean detailed, hehe (hell, I even know the exact length of every scene.. and they really should have cut some!).. :P

I read all the books before seeing the films.
I didn't particularly like PS, I enjoyed CoS although the acting from Radcliffe was pretty dire, and the second half dragged a little.
I had high hopes for PoA even though the book was my least favourite; but I wasn't impressed.
The visual style was all right, but I actually had no problems with Columbus' more 'Hollywood' style.
I also preferred the previous costumes and sets.
The acting was slightly improved, but in general, I just preferred the story of CoS.
Also, a lot of revelant information was chopped, Hermione was irritatingly Sue-like, and there was too much focus on Harry alone, and not the cast as an ensemble; imho.
Plus, there wasn't enough Draco, but that's a personal opinion! ;)

I wasn't expecting this movie to be an accurate rendition of the book -- PoA is my favorite Harry Potter book, and it would take two full-length movies to do it properly. On the whole, I did not mind the streamlining, with three major and one minor exceptions:

  • Harry hearing his parents' deaths -- because it sets things up emotionally

  • The Wolfsbane -- because it makes Lupin's error clearer

  • The Snape/Marauders backstory -- because they'll need it down the line, and it's not like GoF is shorter and will have more room

  • (minor)Draco's dementor scheme!

I did not like the way they did the werewolf -- it should be easier to confuse with a natural wolf -- and the dementors should have stayed nearer the ground and the Patronus had more form. Other than that, I loved how it was shot -- I don't know what people are complaining about there. I seldom want to freeze-frame a movie -- this one looks worth it! The Remus in my head does not look at all like that, and Sirius should be bigger, but those were my only problems with the cast.

So, yeah, I generally liked it. Within the constraints of less than five hours of screen time, I think it was a good job, but it could have been better. B+

I was definitely disappointed with this film. I've read the books many times over and while it wasn't butchered too much, I think that the director got caught up in the details and missed out on the whole plot. It seemed like lots of little parts from the book were in it, but not enough to make a moving, amazing (like the book) story. Also....did anyone else notice the locations of a lot of the scenes were changed? Didn't Hagrid's hut used to be in a flat area closer to the castle??
