So noone told you life was gonna be this way...

So in September, 1994, there was this new show starting, and I was starting my last term of law school, living in DuPont Circle in Washington DC, planning to take the Bar in Florida, and in posession of no clue what I was going to do after graduation, but convinced it would involve staying in DC and working in communications law.

Your job's a joke

I was about to start working for a firm that was trying to get one of their clients a contract with this little company in Northern Virginia called America On-Line. I was in charge of the negotiations, as I knew how to get online with my 4800Baud modem, and my boss didn't know how to use a mouse.

Or if not, I was spending far too much money on margaritas at rooftop restaurants in Adam's Morgan.

But little did I realise that five weeks before, I'd met the man I was going to marry. I told another Zone-friend about a month ago that had I not been starting a romance with Aaron that fall, I might've considered other opportunities. I'm weirdly glad I never did, but I'm also glad that I'm finally focused enough to realise why that sort of thing scared me as long as it did.

Internet communities didn't exist then, not the way we know them now. And it's impossible to explain how glad I am - how proud I am - to have been part of one of the first - one of the longest lasting.

And while I cried tonight at the end of the show, I didn't cry half as much as I did when

laughingirl got back in touch with me last year and I rediscovered the lives of so many people who presences I so strongly missed.

So if I can swing it, maybe we'll do another Secret Santa Extravaganza this winter?
