Setting aside a few memes, where I didn't even write five sentences to choose from, and the three "backdated" posts I made in connection with 9.11, here's my 23rd post meme:

I don't like it.

It's from this post, where we were discussing the NY Times article about Mean Girls, which, of course, was conceptually transmogrified into a movie, and said movie comes out today.

Weird. I still hate mean. And I still know that universal popularity isn't happening any time soon, and that's ok, but I still find it annoying when one of the comments about Why FA Doesn't Deserve That Webby is that FA starts "interfandom awards". But, of course, we never have, so I have no idea what the complainant is talking about. People keep asking us to do fic challenges so people can vote for the "best" fic, but we think it would cause more bad feelings than positive, so we've refrained from doing it. But it doesn't matter - we get accused of doing it anyway. Weird.

Hey, I've actually been poking some of the complainers over at f_w. I think some of it is just axe grinding - or whatever. But there are some valid complaints. Things we've heard before.

I've made it clear ont he curren thread that I am only speaking for myself and not for FA. But I have some ideas. And will ping you later. Some of them we've talked about before.

where should I ping you these days?

YM is best (heiditandy) and AIM is good too - I'll always buzz back if I'm on (travelingheidi).

You know what's bizarre about it all? The complaints all center on things like "FA is where TEH WANK happens!" but the compliments center on "FA allows people to talk about any topics they want, and they don't censor the way other sites do, even when they get complaints."

They can't complain both ways. Yes, people do post wanky things on FA sometimes. No, we cannot prevent Random User X from saying Wanky Statement #217 unless we (a) prescreen all posts and (b) have some subjective standard that bars silly things from being posted. It's just silly.

It's just...
Yes, we know our search engine sucks. It worked well when we had a thousand stories and ten thousand users, but we have outgrown it. And if any of them have any ideas for how to write the code to port all the fics AND all the reviews to a new database without changing any of the URLs for the fics, then I'd appreciate their volunteering to help, because Jon's been working on it for a while, and he thinks he's going to be done this summer, but it's *not* an easy job.

I know. *pats*

Well, the people complaining about the wank are not the people saying they like FA. Different people.

I think some of the stuff being said is valid and I know we are working on it. :D

And the rest of it we should just ignore. ;)

grrrrrrrr. I can't get y!m to work

Well, mainly the complaints are two things.

1. The main page and point me are too cluttered and confusing.

2. Fics are too hard to find. And there is no list (not thread) of fics by pairing or rating.

I know Jon is working on the second thing. And you and I have spoken breifly about David or I helping. But it seems Jon just needs to go it alone, right?

I bet David and/or I could help with the First thing? If you like. I'll be around over the weekend. We can chat if you have some time. We also need to chat about Rhythm and Rhyme. It looks pretty quiet there. And I don't get the sense that McTabby was doing anything there besides modding and posting. :D

Maybe we can come up with a stopgap measure in the meantime for searching for fics by pairing. I can just generate lists with links and we can stick them up. *shrug* It'll mean grunt work on my part. But I am going to have a lot of deadtime at work this summer. So I can probably fit it in.

The main page *and* point me are too cluttered and confusing AND people can't find fics they want? Well, if we stripped all the links to how to find fics off of the front page AND point me, then the pages would be a lot cleaner, but it would be even harder to find anything! And anyone who takes a peek at the FAQ should be able to, at the very least, find a list of fics for the SHIP or character of their choice, because the directions on how to do it are *right* there.

Does anyone there even realise that until about 15 months ago, ffn didn't even have Search By Pairings, and it only works for fics that have been uploaded since they implimented it, or for authors who went back and recategorized their stories? We're trying to make ours backward-compatible so it will catch in everything. Big difference.

You are a great one for this, because you're already very familiar with the setup in the Sorting because you're on for the TLOCNLF, and it would be great to have more people putting fics on the various threads. Already, authors are told *three* times during the submission & upload process that they should list their fics there, and a lot of them do it, but I think that people don't bother to check the lists, even if they are at least somewhat useful.

It would be wonderful to have a team of 2-3 people who would go through the Owls each day and put all the fics into the correct categories in all the SORTING forums - if we had that, and had it happening every day, and let people know it, people *would* use the forums more. If they didn't, they'd be letting a useful tool slip through their fingers. And how wanky would *that* be?

Well, people like to whine. And for the most part we all have seen the stupid compalints - and think why can't you read?!!

Oh - no was NOT suggesting we strip all the links. But maybe I'll spend some time with David this weekend looking at the pages and seeing what could be changed? And we'll send you soem suggestions.

I'll see what I can do on the other front. :D

Clean is good, but the poll needs to stay because nobody can find it otherwise ;)
