ginmar posted about being in the middle of a firefight in Iraq. I spent Sunday - yesterday with Aaron's college friend Anne, who's been back about six weeks from a year in Kuwait and Iraq, and I am so thankful that she is home, because I spent nearly a year worrying about her. My brother in law was also in Iraq briefly in January, but was only there for 10 days, and is not likely to be sent again, for which I am also thankful. But I hear their stories - not just about what it's like to spend a year without home, without ice cubes, without flowers - but what it's like to actually see things blow up, or the aftermath of the destruction. I can't put their words into words capably enough.
rebelcoyote lost part of his foot - and also lost a friend - when someone threw a small bomb into the tank they were sitting in - not shooting, not firing on anything. They were just sitting and guarding.
I support the men and women on the ground in the Middle East with all my heart; they are brave and strong and they are each, individually, amazing. But each battle damages the very important war on terrorism, and while I think the world might recover from six more months of this, if Bush's advisors stay in power beyond November, I fear we will lose any chance of stability in Iraq, and any chance of even mitigating terrorism.
