You can find the transcript of her online chat from this morning here: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/extras/JKRWorldBookDay2004.html - Melissa is a goddess and posted it about as soon as it was done!

It includes gems like Hermione, Ginny & Ron's middle names, why she can't say what Snape's Boggart and Patronus are (I'd bet they're both James!), bits about Draco, Sirius, Moody and more!

(And if your're looking for FA's discussion thread, it's right here: http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56148 )

What houses were Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter and Remus Lupin in? Everyone tells me they were all Gryffindor, but I won't believe it unless I hear it from Ms. Rowling herself!
JK Rowling says: This is JK herself saying that they were indeed in Gryffindor!

Heidi comment: Erm. What about Wormtail? WHY didn't the t00b ask that, too?

hermione 3: Will Harry and Hermione will be together? *sight*
JK Rowling replies -> lol Not saying... but you've had enough clues by now, surely?!

Heidi comment: Haha! She uses double punctuation marks!

Sirius Kase: Will we get to know the Grangers? Is Hermione an only child?
JK Rowling replies -> I always planned that Hermione would have a younger sister but she's never made an appearance and somehow it feels like it might be too late now.

And of course, go [livejournal.com profile] lizardlaugh: I love Tonks, she's my favorite new character. Will she play a large role in future books and/or in Harry's life?
JK Rowling replies -> Tonks is hanging around. I really like her, too.
Heidi comment: : jumps on Harry/Tonks ship

Chibimono: Do you have any future plans in particular for Draco Malfoy?
JK Rowling replies -> I've got plans for all my characters. Actually, this is a really good place to answer a question about Draco and Hermione, which a certain Ms. Radcliffe is desperate to have answered. Will they end up together in book six/seven? NO! The trouble is, of course, that girls fancy Tom Felton, but Draco is NOT Tom Felton!

Heidi Comment: notice she didn't say anything about GETTING together, just ENDING
UP together, and she said in BOOK SIX/SEVEN, which clearly does not
incorporate the world AFTER BOOK SEVEN.

RIGHT?

Ah, we get onto the how many students discussion.

One interview says 1000.
Yet it is now confirmed that there are definitely 10 in Harry's year in Gryffindor, which suggests 280 students.

Wibble. Clearly, we're much more anal about facts than she was when she started fleshing them out. In any case, I've always been a proponent of the theory that Hogwarts takes in all Wizard students, which would make one year of 10 Gryffs, 3 Hufflepuffs, 5 Slytherins and 15 Ravenclaws possible - or if it all gets evened out by the Sorting head, it'd at least make it possible that some years are more crowded than others (considering wartimes etc.).

The money yes, but I am not convinced on the stalking her. Unless of course I can subtely redirect the books towards a proper pairing. This idea shows promise. Harry/Hedwig :D

I don't think she's taken much care with a whole lot of the picky little details that flesh out the world. I suppose that makes sense, as she seems to know the main direction of her narrative and only has to keep that road clear, whereas we're over here on the fringes mapping the backstory for Mrs. Norris.

But the Bill/Charlie age thing is going to give me major fits - I am very bothered. It completely changes the way I have thought about the Weasley family dynamic and throws me for a real loop.

Where did we get the idea that Bill was a near-cohort to the Marauders, anyway? Does anyone remember? I remember looking this up again just a few months ago but I've forgotten again. *sigh*

Read the lexicon (http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/weasley.html) page on it.

The info on Quidditch has given the ages. In PoA we learn that it is seven years since Gryff last won the Cup. It is heavily implied, if not stated, that Charlie was the Seeker then.

The only way to make all this consistent is, thinking while typing, that Charlie only played Seeker as a second/third year [we are told elsewhere that Harry is the youngest in ages and that first years do not play]. However this does not explain the comments about how good Charlie was and how highly he was considered.

Damn, I even went back there before I posted that b/c I was pretty sure that's where it was, but went straight to Bill's page when I got to the link and didn't scroll all the way down. *double sigh*

It's actually bad on its face, b/c if Charlie is two years older than Percy, that means that he should be in his 7th year when Ron is in his 1st. That means his genius seeking couldn't have happened in his 2nd year, or he'd still be there. If it happened in his 3rd year, he's just left Hogwarts in time for Ron to start, but I think that bumps the Cup interval down to 6 years. I think that's right - it needs to be checked.

Sorting this is all the proof I need that the Weasleys have too many children. [livejournal.com profile] olivia_lupin, I think there are word problems in there somewhere. :)

Thanks, Simon.

Two years older allows for there being three school years inbetween the pair of them. If Charlie is young (i.e. born towards the end of the year) for his year and Percy old then it can work.

The years since they last won the Quid Cup depends on exactly how it was phrased. If it says that they last won the cup seven attempts ago then it would be Charlie's third year, else his second.

-7 - Charlie start at Hogwarts
-6 - Charlie becomes Gryff Seeker
-5 - Gryff win Quid Cup, with Charlie as Seeker
-4 - Percy starts at Hogwarts
-3
-2 - Twins start at Hogwarts
-1 - Charlie leaves
PS
CoS
PA - Gryff win Quid Cup

Yes, you're absolutely right. It was this youngforhisyear!Charlie that I was struggling with. I finally figured this out on the way back from the school run. :-/

It's mornings like this when I really miss coffee. Tea is a weak substitute for a caffeine jolt. I should know not to try to solve any problems more complicated than "where are my shoes?" before 9 am. Thanks. :)

I hate that my mad maths skillz have gone the way of the dodo, and actually I'm happy to blame it on the caffeine. Would you believe that it was my minor? And that my BS is in Physics? *sobs for the time when I could think in a straight line instead of big loops and swirls*

Compare and contrast: There weren't a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin (or some such)

Sirius Black, widely regarded as Voldemort's heir apparent, and probably the most infamous 'apparent' Death Eater, was a Gryffindor.

Doesn't the second undermine the weight of the first statement, a tad? ;-)

But that statement was made by Hagrid not JKR. There is not reason to assume that the perceptions of characters as to the world about them is always correct - I think she rather like having her characters mislead her readers.

Actually, I've always shipped Draco/Hermione without actually thinking that JK would put them in the books, so having her say this doesn't bother me at all, really. Perhaps it's because I, being the t00by H/D shipper that I am, am used to dealing with ships that probably won't come to pass in canon.
