I just wanted to post it here to see if any more recs would be forthcoming:

Which fics written after OotP came out would you recommend to a total newbie?
Other than the fics listed in the Masterlist of Oft-Recommended Fics, that is.

In other words, what fics written since OotP came out would you recommend to someone who is totally new to HP fanfics? Please give title & url.

Mild R-rating or less, and good grammar/spelling only - but the fic does NOT have to be on FA. However, nothing that is *only* on an 18+ Yahoogroup should be recced in this particular list, because I want to rec things that are accessable.

Also, while WIPs are okay, as this won't be public until March, nothing with two or fewer chapters, unless it's truly finished and just being uploaded piecemeal.

Note: I have a lot of H/D, a lot of S/R and enough pre-ootp R/Hr. What I don't have are post-ootp Snape-centric fics, or much of anything about Neville, non-romance Hermione, Percy or any James/Lily that was written entirely after OotP.

I'm sort of fond of my own "Draco Malfoy's Diary," which is a parody using Bridget Jones Diary and taking place during OotP. It's had a really good response, but perhaps it doesn't qualify, as I only have two chapters up thus far. I'm currently about halfway through the third chapter, but trying to get caught up to the point that each chapter uploads with the month it's covering.

I'll check out that list of recommended fics to see what's on there before I recommend anything else.

Summary of DMD:
Meet Draco Malfoy--a teenage Slytherin who is certain he would have
all the answers if he could:
a. lose 15 pounds
b. win the Quidditch Cup
c. win the House Cup

Draco Malfoy's Diary is the devastatingly self-aware, tongue-in-cheek daily chronicle of Draco's permanent, doomed quest for self-improvement--a school year in which he resolves to: beat Potter at Quidditch, beat Granger at O.W.L.s, and beat Weasley at everything.

Takes place during Order of the Phoenix.

I know, this is pimping myself, but:

Changes explores the way Lily's perception of James might shift after "Snape's Worst Memory" and the "Sirius sent Snape after Lupin and All I Got was this Nifty New Set of Scars" incident. :)

[livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida has a very interesting AU WIP with Neville as The Boy Who Lived. She has just a prologue and two chapters (long), but I'm sure she'd have more by March. I am loving it so far :)

Once upon a time, there was a prophecy. However, the Boy Who Lived is no longer the boy destined to defeat Voldemort -- or be defeated by him.

She doesn't have the best summary ever, but it's a fantastic fic.

Marauder has written a post-OotP P/O fic called "In A Time of Uncertainty". I've only skimmed through it as I'm uploading, but it seems pretty good. Or did you mean you wanted non-romance Percy, too? I can't tell.

Won't be much, I guess, but I wrote a short Snape-centric (well, harrycentric, from Snape's viewpoint -- though entirely nonromantic) for 15minuteficlets:

(I don't read much fanfic so I'm afraid I can only offer my own :D)

R.J. Anderson's Cold Water is a very interesting Snape gen fic, but it's somewhat tied into her other fics. However, since her series is already on your rec masterlist...it's worth a look...

I'd be happy to write a post-OotP H/Hr or L/J. Let me know.

Heidi,

In a week or two, [livejournal.com profile] sternel and I are going live with our new archive The Pensieve (http://pensievethoughts.tripod.com (http://pensievethoughts.tripod.com)). It's for missing scenes from canon. We have sections for each book, including OotP, which, so far, is the biggest archive. It's not fully uploaded yet, but we're working on it.

All the fics are PG 13, and so far, from memory, we have Percy, Molly, Neville, Sirius, R/Hr, and counting.

Hoping this helps!

-MA

Sure there are. I don't think any of these are explicit NC17, but there may be some R's in here:

What He Wants is post-OotP Snape/Harry and doesn't bash the PM. Learning Curve is introspective, non-shippy, and gives excellent insight into Snape motivation post-OotP.

Then there's Beyond the Veil which has Snape, Remus, Sirius and Harry - quite a nice read, not shippy at all, well plotted and keeps with canon. Great for newbies to fic.

Niobe is post OotP Hermione/Remus (probably R).

I'll join the self-pimping, "A Day in the Life Of Narcissa Malfoyhttp://www.riddikulus.org/authors/angelaboyko/ADILNM.html was written post-OoTP, is quick to read and laugh over, and I'm just betting you're not flooded with Narcissa fics. :-)

I realize this is an old post, but I'm wondering. You say:

Masterlist of Oft-Recommended Fics

Are you being ironical? Or are you alluding to something that really exists? At FA?

I friended you as "polpotter" btw; I still read and comment as "idlerat," it just gives me a separate, HP-only friends page. *waves*

It's the title of something a bunch of fapers (regulars on fictionalley park) pulled together last May based on which fics were most often recommended in the Author Recs - Fanfic forum at http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums. It includes fics on and off FA, and other than making the thread sticky, the mods've really had nothing to do with it's setup.

Thanks Heidi-
I'm curious to see this (I can see, as a mod, where it would be annoying, & I certainly understand why big groups want to avoid deciding what's in their canon, but I'm quite curious).

Anyway I've been looking for it. That's some powerful search tool you've got over there at FAP, btw, though when I was a newbie I was totally baffled by it, and haven't been back for a long time.

So I looked at the Author Rec FF forum for the last year, alphabetically, and found no thread of this title. Is there anything else you can tell me to help with my search (I also googled the title in a couple permutations)

Thanks-
Rat
