Checking in to say that everything is fine here in Miami - also, I've talked to [livejournal.com profile] queerasjohn, [livejournal.com profile] epicyclical and [livejournal.com profile] angiej, and [livejournal.com profile] aegeus talked to [livejournal.com profile] jlh and everyone is fine at the moment.

What's up with those of you who live near the cities, but not actually in them - do you have power or no?

Edited to update:
A major power outage simultaneously struck several large cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon. A New York state official said the outage came when the Niagara-Mohawk power grid failed. Officials don't believe the outage is related to terrorism. - that's from CNN's site

I live about 26 miles outside of Boston and am unaffected. I guess everyone's been going overboard with the A/C lately, eh?

Scary though... I thought for a moment that it was terrorism.

Glad you're okay!

Hugs,
Elia

Our regional office in Cleveland has shut down.

Not that anyone there is upset. :-)

Just heard that the source of the power outtage is a power station in New York, which obviously affects the NE grid. There is no indication of terrorism. *whew*

I am told CNN has it wrong and Boston was not affected at all.

Unless something's happening in other parts of Boston than where I am, CNN does have it wrong.

*whew* Glad to see you're on top of things, Heidi. Am not considerably calmer. My brother-in-law keeps wondering out loud when NYC is going to blow up, and it's driving me slightly batty.

I know Mayor Bloomberg was cautioning people to be careful walking home in this heat, and to drink lots of liquids....

It's not as big an outage as I was expecting from the hub-bub around here - half of New England isn't involved at all (yay!). We deal with Continental Airlines here at work, so naturally it was a big deal for us.

To be honest, I am absolutely astonished at the press and hoopla this is getting. Giant power outage. I get it. People stuck on subway, need to be careful in the heat, watch for traffic intersections, blah blah. However, there was no other news on TV today. It was like 9/11. Which I think is a bit much for a power outage.

Anyway - the entire Philly region is supposedly fine.

I'm inclined to agree - if this had happened anywhere else, it would have gotten a quick mention, but not a big "BLACKOUT" graphic on cnn.com. Dude.

I think it's because it not only affected the biggest city in the States, but two of the biggest cities Canada has, and looked like it could have been a LOT bigger at first -- like the Big Blackout in the '60s.

And, of course, the paranoia factor.

I agree, I'm in Toronto right now, and we get electricity in turns of two hour periods. It's affected the whole of Ontario, and Ottawa, the Nation's capital. It's taken out the electricity in Parliament Hill too (the equivalent of the Whitehouse), although I'm not sure as to whether or not they've got it back up again. About half of the province has electricity, and the rest are stuck buying their dinners off of hotdog venders tonight. I believe it's affected parts of Chicago and Detroit as well, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Glad all the New Yorkers are okay. We're fine here in Boston, but we appear to be the only ones. Apparently we're actually sending power to New York at the moment :D Western Mass, a few states south of us, Canada, VT, and CT all lost power -- it's an island of electricity here! *grin*

Didn't come this far south. But I'm amazed at the press it's getting. I mean, it is a big event, but then a large chunk of Philadelphia spent the other day without power and the only time it was mentioned was on the traffic reports (to let folks know there were no traffic lights in that area of the city).

I think we're just overloading some of the powerstations with all the fans/AC/etc (at least that's the hypothesis for the Philly outtage the other day)

I'm about halfway between Newark and New York, and while I lost power for about 20 minutes around 5:30 this afternoon, everything has been all right otherwise.

that teaches me to live in the 'sticks'.
i'm on long island. everyone else on LI got their power back at noon.
mine came on at six.

remind me to never again be stuck in a traffic jam during a power failure again -- nothing like navigating rte. 347 with NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS.

but i'm glad everyone else is fine. off to clean my fridge...

We got zapped here in Michigan, too, and I'm thinking that just now the majority of Detroit got their power back...
