[livejournal.com profile] mhw wrote, in his LJ:
People seem to be variously wibbling and incandescing about the possibility that the students in the next HP film will be seen not wearing uniform.

My response to such wibbling:

Yeah? So?

In the book PoA, Harry wears a t-shirt with a pocket in it - he puts his wand in the pocket - under his Quidditch robes.

The Weasleys get new sweaters every year - and we know from OotP that they're pure-bloods.

When they change into their robes on the train in Book 1, they just pull them on - nothing said about changing out of their Muggle clothing, so there's an implication that they at least *can* wear Muggle clothing underneath.

In PS/SS: The Movie, Draco - yes, pureblood snob Draco - is wearing a charcoal coloured turtleneck sweater and slacks in the scene when they're getting chewed out by Prof McG about being out after-hours. So it's even movie!canon for DRACO to wear things other than robes + uniform while at school.

The ironic thing about all this is, people have been complaining about the uniforms for YEARS.

Oh, and speaking of years-old comments about the films, [livejournal.com profile] jiggery_pokery might want to take a look at this.

So please forgive me if I don't get involved in the heartbroken wibbling - it's a combination of "I don't really see a problem here..." and "Been there, done that."

Oh, I quite agree. Thank you for making those points.

One minorest nitpick, though - technically it's "his LJ" :)

I don't mind so much the muggle clothing as the loss of the robes. First because I was always under the impression that wizarding folk tended to where robes as kind of a standard every day dress. (Though I can definitely see Harry, Hermione, other muggle borns, and even Ron occassionally dropping the robes). But also because I thought the robes just looked really cool.

I have always thought (as you said) that the robes (at least for school) are things that can just be thrown over muggle clothes however.

Oh, I so totally agree. As I was reading all the complaining, I couldn't help think back to a few years ago when the first SS pictures were released. "Uniforms! Why are they wearing uniforms?" was all anyone said (although I personally liked them). They just need to chill out....

And I think (from the pictures I've seen so far) that this movie is going to totally ROCK. I'm already predicting it will be much better than the first two. That's just me, though...

Amen, amen.

Everyone I ever knew who had to wear a uniform to school found a way to tweak it to be more personal, and wore it as little as humanly possible.

They're teens, they're in PUBERTY, they're starting to date. The hell they're going to wear shapeless, boring, uniform uniforms all the time.

But the point is that in most Independant/public schools, the kids do wear uniform of some sort. Usually smart stuff.

I was thinking that the wearing of teenage clothes was more of a rehearsal thing, but then, I don't know how it works for movies. Do they just shoot and shoot 'til they get it right, or do they practice first?

I stumbled across this gripe (regarding the movies and also fanfiction) late, i.e. when it had been quite a while since I'd read the books. My first reaction was "well what about that mention in...er, one of the books...where Harry is mentioned as wearing jeans? Not jeans under his robes, but jeans, at school, no mention of robes, presumably not wearing robes because it's after school hours...." But I couldn't remember in which book I'd seen that and didn't feel like checking, so I've stayed out of the argument. I still don't feel like checking, but I would bet a small amount of money that it's there somewhere. *g*

At any rate, that's the last thing that would bother me. Even if it was canon, it wouldn't even make my radar, actually.

The only thing that bothers me is that I may have to close my eyes whenever Lupin is on the screen in PoA. ;P There have been times when an actor didn't match my vision of a character at all, but generally I don't mind. Rupert Grint, Alan Rickman -- neither match what I think the canon characters look like at *all* but eh, I like them. But the way Lupin looks -- yikes. I mean. O_o But ah well. Minor quibbles.

Stay wibble free. I'm not wibbling. Even though it does sort of bother me that we couldn't stay consistent throughout all three movies.

Well, I think the film is more fun with them in robes, and also will date less quickly. But ... *shrugs*

In GoF, though, don't you remember how a lot of the wizards didn't know how to dress like a Muggle? Even Arthur Weasley isn't sure how to dress. And let's not forget the wizard in the nightgown who likes a healthy breeze around his privates.

I think JKR has been inconsistent on this, but whatever. My own preference is for continuity with the earlier films.

I didn't mind even Draco wearing Muggle clothing in that PS scene because it was after school hours. But that wand shot looks like it's daytime (and it *should* be after CoMC class), so unless they're tweaking the storyline to be a weekend, then I think they should be in robes. After classes - I don't really care what they're wearing, movie or book. But for things shot during class hours, I think they should have on robes.

For me, the absence of uniforms makes them seem a bit too American. However, it's hard to judge the movie from just a few scenes, and I would imagine that they'd have had JKR's buy-in (wouldn't they?).
Viewing of the entire film will tell in the end, whether or not it works.

Yeah, it's not so much the fact that they're wearing muggle clothing, it's the fact that they look like they've been shopping at H&M.

Yeah exactly, consistency! I'm just not buying the sudden hair change for Draco unless the first thing he says in PoA is, "My Father says hair gel is for Muggles." Hmmph.

Never mind that it's Muggle clothings, they are from Top Shop (or Hot Topic). Why are Slytherins shopping at Muggle shopping centres?

Well, Melissa (I think) at TLC just put up another pic that shows them in uniform, so I guess they only wear normal kids gear on their off hours. It *is* inconsistent, but I think that JKR is as much at fault as the filmmakers are. So we can all BREATHE EASY.

I like Goyle in his uniform, though. I'm all about Goyle. Also hot!Neville. Remember that pic?

I will link to it, for the pleasure of all: http://www.tomfelton.com/gallery.php?img=244

Stud!Neville, lookin' like Christian Bale! Goyle slimmed down and muscled up. Daniel Radcliffe looking like a girl. And David Heyman, way in back, the Hottest Of Them All.

As for the hair bit ... well, kids go through hairstyles all the time. That doesn't bother me. Although I liked the visual symbolism of Lucius having long hair and Draco being forced to wear it so brutally slicked back. Poor widdle Draco.

That is EXACTLY what I was going to bring up. If the kids are always running around in "Muggle" clothing, why the heck is it that the adults can't seem to figure it out? They have to buy or make their kids' clothes, and they WERE kids at one point... I think JKR has done a rather poor job with this element. Even if the adults are running around wearing robes with nothing on underneath them, they had to have SOME knowlege of what is considered "Muggle" clothes.

I loved your comment:

Comment from Heidi Tandy: Of course, I also think that everyone should go through the last four chapters and replace Sirius' name with Hagrid, and I know a lot of people who disagree with me on that...

The brief form was good for a sort of bitter laugh, and your longer explanation made excellent sense. I know I'd be much happier....

And YAY, you got two of my questions!
