A Deep Dark Family Sekret...
Jun. 26th, 2003 10:00 am What the heck is wrong with cousins marrying each other?
Eleanor & Franklin were (distant) cousins...
And so were my children's great great grandparents on their father's father's father's side.
Yes, Aaron's great grandparents were cousins - first cousins, as a matter of fact - and I don't think there's been any lasting ill effects, apart from the utter inability of anyone (bar one uncle) on that branch of the family to produce a girl. Sons. Everyone has sons. No daughters. But I don't think they're really connected.
So long live my new plot bunny wherein the Grownups in the Black family were shipping Sirius/Narcissa from the time they were in their cradle...
And that MWPP-era Emma fic...
And SoC, which I wrote about a page of yesterday...
Ah, gotta love the sleeping baby.
Speaking of which, here's a new picture (large res as usual).

Date: 2003-06-26 07:29 am (UTC)No, not even first cousins.
It's all a societal thing.

Date: 2003-06-26 07:44 am (UTC)I have a BS degree in horse breeding and all thoughout high school I bred and showed guinea pigs. There is actually proof that breeding counsins results in *stronger* genetic line (the good traits amplify and the poor traits tend to fall away).
As an aside this is called *line-breeding* (same bloodlines but not a direct relation between the two), not *inbreeding* (where the two are directly related). Line breeding is HUGE in horses (my own horse has the same relative show up 3 times in his pedigree) and absolutely necessary once in awhile to produce strong healthy cavies.

Oh...well, do I feel foolish...um.
Those interested in the question might want to check out the CUDDLE folks ("Cousins Uniting to Defeat Discrimation Laws through Education"), who are mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore. Of note is the map of US state cousin marriage laws. I was highly surprised to see that it's legal in quite a bit of the country.
Religion-wise, according to this thing, the Orthodox churches prohibit first-cousin marriages, most Protestant denominations allow it, and the Catholic Church allows it if you get permissiom from the Diocese. Jewish law, incidentally, forbids first-cousin marriage but oddly allows uncle-niece marriage. (And in fact some US states have had to modify their consanguinity laws to allow this to avoid being called for religious persecution!)
Sirius and Cissy are of course in the UK and wizards to boot and, near as I can tell, cousin marriages are just straight-up allowed, no restrictions, no harm, no foul.
In short, I look forward to MWPP!Emma and the childhood pushing-together of Sirius and Narcissa. Theirloveissosurprisinglylegal.
...This, by the way, is what happens when I am procrastinating from doing actual work. My apologies. :)

3. Your son is very large. Or it could just be the high res. But we couldn't see his teeth!

Date: 2003-06-26 08:04 am (UTC)Secondly, cousins can marry, I don't see the problem at all. It's a bit touch and go for first cousins to marry, genetically speaking, if they plan on having children. But after that, the distance makes them as different as you and...your neighbor.

Date: 2003-06-26 11:11 am (UTC)And, as far as I know, as long as you're not double cousins, it's fine, both legally and genetically. Of course, generations of inbreeding is no good, as it leads to royalty... ;)
