Can someone explain, gently, to a Wombat of Very Little Brain, why people give a rat's arse care so very much about what is, and what isn't Canon?

As a writer: I think it's because if you take a fanon representation and put your own spin on it, then someone else takes that and puts their own spin on it, continue the process awhile and you end up with something WAY out in left field. If you know what canon is, you'll always know when you're delving out of it and into your own material.

As a reader: The canon is what got me into this fandom...I'm reading fanfic because I want to see other peoples ideas spawned from that canon. There are *many* pieces out there that would simply not be as enjoyable if I didn't have a solid canon grounding going into them.

Just my 2 knuts!

I think that's a very healthy take on it, and it pretty well sums up my feelings. It's a data source, not Holy Writ, which is how too many people seem to regard it.

For myself, quite frankly I love the original first and foremost. Fanfiction is an entertaining secondary. There are a couple of fanfic universes I've read and do adore, but if I ever fell out of love with Rowling I'd fall out of love with the whole shebang. The originals are the lynch-pin. As far as I'm concerned, without them there is no Harry Potter universe at all.

If that helps at all, perhaps you could do me the favor in return of explaining how people could not care about what is and isn't canon?

I think it's a kind of grumpy reaction on my part to the chorus of despair that's met Book 5 - "Oh no, look what she's done, everything we've written since Book 4 is *wrong*".

That bugs me. I hate people who've written their hearts out feeling that what they've done has become worthless overnight. I hate even more people pointing fingers at others and telling them that they *ought* to grovel because they "got it wrong". Anyone ever comes up to me and sneers that their writing is More Canonical than mine, they'll get a poke on the snoot.

It's a book in a series of books. It's not a Golden Calf.

...i saw the entry from [livejournal.com profile] lupercus, with "has anyone seen Sirius" on the bottom, and my heart just stopped.
am so glad they are not following canon...i need some cheeriness in that regard.

I don't care what she's said in interviews. He's not really dead, he's in a hell dimension. He can’t leave Remus all alone or Harry. He’ll be back. I know he'll be back some how.

A couple of us from the HP meetup would love to meet you this Saturday at the meeting set for two o'clock. As I know you cannot stray far from your little one we would be willing to move the meeting to somewhere that is more convinient to you. If this sounds like a good idea, please email me at: gianadel@aol.com

Unfortunately, I have a wedding at noon, and friends coming in from NYC that evening - but perhaps we could figure out a time the following weekend, here on Miami Beach, or even one evening during the week, or lunch-hour?

You can email me - heidi@fictionalley.org works.
