Bush said something sensible on Friday.
No, not that Bush. His brother. The guy who's the governer of my (often silly) state.

In our country, people may not agree with my brother's actions. But in our country, we can express our opinion...

Jeb, I still don't support many of your policies, but I now have a smidge of respect for you - moreso than I do for people like the congressman who said that any protest against or disagreement with the war is treasonous.

But we "anti-Dixie Chicks protesters" also have the right to express our opinions that the Dixie Chicks should shut the hell up and just sing and look pretty... :)

That quote would also apply to any protesters, Chick or otherwise. You have a right to get out there and speak.

The problem arises when people confuse this with the right to be listened to. If you can't make an audience listen, that's *your* problem. All you are guaranteed is the right to try.

*sigh* And I do wish the Chicks would have just shut up and sung.

Jeb Bush actually said that? Sheesh. Maybe he has some brains after all.
However, I still wanted McBride to win. Oh well. I'm leaving this state anyway soon.

That does add a smidge of respect... also, I'm temporarily retiring my 'goatblower' icon, as it seems a bit frivolous- I was wondering if I could have your permission to use that candle icon you have up.

Gee, you die easy.

If I were [livejournal.com profile] heidi8 this would *not* encourage me to run to Schnoogle.com and put DV12 up. Always assuming the holdup is something she can fix right away, which it probably isn't. In fact, if I were Heidi reading that comment, I'd probably yawn, log off and go catch a movie.

So I'm glad Heidi's not me, since I'd like to read DV12 soon too. On the other hand, if her computer's crashed or she has a medical emergency or she just has a hundred other things to do today, or even had a lapse of memory, I know how to cross my legs and wait. It's not like the chapter's going to go *off* if we don't devour it right away.

And I have the right to say that's easily the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, as the Dixie Chicks are citizens of this country too.

In others, too. Go Germany!

This whole Dixie Chicks fiasco has created an amusing interplay between the principle of free speech and the forces of the free market. I find it amusing that the "Chick" in question issued an apology only after country music stations stopped playing Dixie Chicks songs in response to audience disapproval of the comments.

One is left to wonder if the apology was truly an act of contrition, a change of heart, or simply a rush to maintain her cash flow. I might have been more impressed by her convictions if she had never apologized at all, or if she had more precisely articulated her opposition in the first place.

Regards,
Steve

Yes you do. But don't you think what they said was a just a bit rediculous, at least from a common sense point of view? I mean, common sense would tell you (and should have told them) that most of their fans, most country fans in general, tend to be rather more patriotic than average and they would likely take offense to comments like that.

Certainly they have the right to say anything they like, even if I think it was supremely stupid. But then I have the right to no longer buy their CDs. And from the way their record sales have plummetted, it looks like others are exercising that same right.
