Honey, one of the astronauts on board - she was born in India. Just making sure you knew.

I know, that's why I'm so shocked. I did a report on Kalpana Chawla this Monday, at school. I just can't believe this.

Is Kalpana Chawla at all related to an Avinash Chawla, do you know? Just asking since you did a report on Kalpana and all, and Avinash Chawla is a good friend of our family. He is also from India.

I wouldn't know, actually. Chawla is a fairly common surname.

The irony is, when we lost Challenger, I wrote (by mistake) in my journal that Columbia had blown up, and I had to go back later and fix it. And now it *is* Columbia.

Do you remember (near-age-peer of mine) watching the Challenger, over and over?

I was lying on the basketball court when our teacher came out to tell us. Over biscayne bay, we could see the streaks at the horizon.

I was in Geometry class, freshman year, when the announcement came in on the PA system.

i know i'm not exactly a near-age peer, i was in third grade, but i remember that, too. our third grade teacher told us, after lunch i think. and when i got home, i remember being upset both over the explosion, and that they kept showing the same footage over, and over, and seemingly very little actual information as to what had gone wrong and if anything could have been done to prevent it. i just wanted them to stop showing it.

I turned on the TV that day, about noon, and didn't have the sound on. I was wondering where "All My Children" was so I turned the sound on and watched it explode, over and over and over. Just horrifying. And it seemed, seeing it on TV, so remote. I am okay here... the debris field is a few hours north of me.

It doesn't seem real, does it? I keep thinking of the family now that has to say the kaddish for their loved one.

Oh God. Thank you for telling us - am watching CNN but don't appear to be getting anything new - it's all just confusion and nothing been confirmed yet. They're saying now it's unlikely to be terrorists, but they seem to have very little acual information.

My roommate is an astronomical engineer major who wants to get into NASA and she wasn't here this morning, but I kept getting phone calls for her this morning and then when she came in and turned on the TV, I found out. That's just unbelieveable. *stares at TV in shock*

And this is going to kill the space program. And the International Space Station along with it.

Being as young as I am, I wasn't around for Challenger. The biggest disaster I can remember happening in my lifetime is September 11th--and by this Columbia accident, I'm kind of reminded of that. Not in a terrorist attack sense, but the sense that the news stations just keep playing...and playing...and playing the footage. And I wish they wouldn't.

Yes, this is very bad. Also with an Israeli astronaut on board will not be helpful politically. *swallows*
