Would you send your child to a school whose ad touted them as "one of the top Florida Academys"?

As a student, the Florida public school system has always been good enough for me. (Then again, I go to Lake Brantley, which is the top high school in the state.) Personally, I would check out the opinions of parents whose students attended the "academy" before rather than merely go on the basis of such an ad.

In a word? Nah. :)

Am on cell today, dear--mom's dragging me out to the middle of nowhere to visit Dani, and then there's shopping and party-prep for tonight.

*hugs*

Good surfing there?

Grew up in Central Florida. I know at one point we were 49th in the US, with only Mississippi - the poorest state - worse than us. Perhaps it's not so bad now?

I believe we are 47th now.

(And I grew up in central FL too, and am a product of the public school system. Now my siblings are teachers in public schools!)

My home state of Louisiana is 49 now...that's why I'm a fucking idiot.

Bwah ha!

Appalling, but (unfortunately) not surprising.

I was taking a continuing ed course that was held in a high school. The atrocities committed against the english language by the principal, the guidance department, and the staff were frightening.

Of course now I am worrying that I have made some error in this post that will make me look like an ass...

No.

And I might send them a little note, too.

Improper pluralization ticks me off about as much as misused apostrophes. But then, I'm an editor by trade and spend my days moralizing to people about how "utilize" does NOT mean the same as "use." *sigh*

I am *so* with you on both of those!!!!!--particularly when they are used in tandem (e.g. I have two car's. ARGH!)

*ponders over-punctuation as a potential flaw*

The use of "utilize" as a substitute for "use" has spread like a disease, especially in the consulting industry.

I feel your pain.

If you haven't seen this, you must. It will make you feel better, or at least as though there is a unified and righteously angry team of proper punctuation pedants in the world... ;)

The use of "utilize" as a substitute for "use" has spread like a disease, especially in the consulting industry.

And indeed, that would be exactly where I am. ;)

I feel your pain.

*raises a glass of water and toasts you*

First, ask around. Ask people whos children attend the school, ask former teachers... all that stuff.

Go look at the school itself. How do you feel about it? What's the mood on the place? Gut feelings and all that.

Actually, I heard that Florida came in 50th compared to the rest of the states, and if Puerto Rico were to become a state (which is highly doubtful), Florida would be 51st. As a student in a public school and a South Florida resident, this makes me very, very sad not to mention makes me feel...well...stupid. I'm not sure on my numbers, but high school dropouts are rapidly approaching to 50% of the students. (This is not to blame on immigrants who are actually doing quite better than students born here.) Wah. I think, however, if students stick to honors and advanced placement programs they'll be all right. (Hopefully.) And Florida universities...don't even let me get started on those. Double wah. Good luck on the hunt. ;)

While in general the schools are not exemplary. I graduated with several friends admitted to well respected schools like Harvard, Stanford and MIT. And, even though I attended a a state University, at that time it had a top microbiology Dept and one of the top 10 journalism schools. A classmate of mine was accepted to Cal Tech, post grad, and is now a Mars mission architect at JPL. So, we ain't all stupid.

Part of this is because Puerto Rico doesn't spend on a military. It's always the choice between guns and butter, and they don't spend on guns. They spend it all on butter (social issues) and that's why they have a pretty good education system.

That's it, if I remembered correctly...

Hey, I went to a Florida university. And one of my fandom friends will be a 2003 graduate of another Florida state university, and *she* just got into University of Michigan law school--one of the top 10 in the nation. All of my college friends are doing well for themselves, and I'm not chopped liver either.

Trust me, Florida unis don't all suck... it's just that with all the sun, fun, and beaches, students can get more easily distracted, unlike in New England or the Midwest where they're buried under mounds of snow for a large part of the school year!

I will second that. The Florida uni system served me quite well, and I wouldn't trade my education for anything.

And Heidi, as for a school that totes iself as a top Florida academy, I'd personally say no. But that's just me ...

The California School System is pretty bad too - I haven't really experienced too many negative episodes, but that might be because I'm going to one of the top public schools in the state and also one of the top public high schools in the nation, so :: shrugs ::. (that previous statement was not meant to sound pretentious, if it does, I apologize) But even my school isn't without faults - I had a teacher sophomore year for english that couldn't spell to save her life...
