Tonight, I tasted euphoria.

We went to this carnival-style thing in downtown Miami tonight - it's called the Winter Holiday Town and there's about 40 rides, some carny-games and the usual junk food. As I couldn't go on any of the rides (although Harry loved everything but the Really Big Ferris Wheel) I amused myself by people watching and later, by trying something I'd never had before, in the food section.

You know how candy apples - the kind covered with the red lollipop-style covering - are one of the most amazing foods in the universe?

Well, imagine that kind of covering on...

Strawberries. On a skewer. Covered with a not-too-thick layer of that red lollipop stuff.

I had eight. And I have no words to describe their utter amazingness, in a not-totally-junk-food way. Crunchy, sweet, tart and completely, truly, delicious.

And I will likely never have them again. But they will live in my heart for all eternity.

see what happens when you can't have champagne or margaritas for two years?

Sounds to me that they taste better than champagne or margaritas... not that I'd know what margaritas taste like...

Aww, I'm sorry you can't drink the things you want. But hey, discover other loves (as in food) in this time. Hope the pregnancy is going well!

God I want one of those.

I sympathise on the alcohol-free lifestyle. I haven't had a drink since Millenium eve. I found out I was pregnant the following day, and then breast-fed for a ridiculously long time. I am now too scared of what a drink would do to me to risk having one.

I comfort myself in the knowledge that my last ever drink was champagne and Red bull mixed in a bucket at 4.00am on New Years Day 2000.

See? I was a wild thing once upon a time *sigh*

These'd be easy as sin to make.

Modifying from a candied apple recipe:

3 cups white sugar
1/2 cup white corn syrup
1/2 cup water
8 cinnamon red hot candies
1 teaspoon red food coloring
strawberries, washed and destemmed
skewers

Poke 2 to 3 strawberries on to the tip of each skewer.

Butter a baking dish/cookie sheet and place to the side.

Combine sugar, corn syrup and water in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Heat, without stirring, to 270 to 290 degrees F (132 to 143 degrees C), or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms hard but pliable threads. Remove from heat and stir in candies and food coloring until just mixed.

Holding each skewer by the non-strawberry end, quickly twirl in syrup, tilting pan to cover berries. Lift out of syrup, turning to allow drips to adhere to berries. Place berries on prepared baking sheet to cool completely.
