Les Miz is closing in March. In other words, I'll never get to see it in NYC again. Wibble.

I spent about an hour t00bing around the first fandom I ever really played in online - the one for the (admittedly in retrospect dumb) british 70's sf show The Tomorrow People, which I fell for when it aired on Nickelodeon back in the v. early 80s, way back in the day of You Can't Do That On Television, The Third Eye, Belle & Sebastian and that show which we also got on film in elementary school where they followed talented kids around for a week. You know, the Livewire! days.

Anyhow, it turns out that they're releasing all the eps of the show in the UK on DVD, but they're Region 0, so they'll play on all dvd players worldwide. I am trying to decide whether I should get all the eps, some of the eps, or the "series" sets - and am also waiting for Series 5 and beyond, which I liked more.

I found myself wondering if I'd've read HP when I did if it hadn't been for this show. I mean, when I was a silly 11 year old with very few cultural references, I saw this show and became a bit obsessed with British stuff - it was the same time as the Duran Duran invasion, which may've made an impact too - but between the two things, I started buying British music, books, magazines, etc. And it's a crush-affair that never really ended - hence, my "early adoption" of The Eyre Affair last Spring. But of course, I never would've known that the dvds were being released if I hadn't gone over to Amazon.co.uk in search of some British HP stuff. So it's all cyclical - everything leads to something semi-related.

Belle and Sebastian?! *jaw drops* I used to love that show, and you are only one of a handful of other people who seem to know about it. I've asked so many people if they remember it, and almost no one does. This made my day :)

Okay - so we have differing opinions about Les Miz...

but I had totally forgotten about the Tomorrow People. I too was 11 and saw it on Nickelodeon...
I was totally hooked. Gosh - I loved that show. I was raised by anglophiles though - so I was getting BBC'd to death anyways. What was the thing they used to do to "apparate"? Jaunting or something? funny - I never made the connection between HP and that. Brilliant! Heidi I just love you! there is a fandom? HP is my first fandom...

Belle & Sebastian - I used to watch it with my little brother - and too this day I still want a great pyrenees dog or a newfie (padfoot?)

also did you know there is a band called "Belle & Sebastain" they are rather sweet and popular among the hipster crowd...

I wish I had known Heidi when we were 11...

The website is at http://66.66.192.162/tp/default.htm - it's called Teleporter Take-Out. The episode guide is here and there used to be a mailing list as well - it's now a Yahoogroup, it seems. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thetomorrowpeople/

I wish I'd known you when I was 11 too - sometimes I wish there had been an internet when I was in junior high school and later - I wouldn't've had to drive twenty miles to the import record store, or order magazines from Record Runner in NYC, and I would've had people to share by obscure obsessions with. Nobody I grew up with wanted to listen to Aztec Camera or Prefab Sprout - it wasn't until I got to college that I met anyone else who had ever heard of such things...

I now have a mad urge to listen to "appetite" by Prefab Sprout or "Life in a Northern Town" by the Dream Academy and watch the DVD's of the TP...

back to work...

The Third Eye was *such* a wierd show; I loved it. And Belle & Sebastian - ever since my son started watching shows like Pokemon etc in which the characters' mouths just sort of stay open while the voice-over actor talks reallyreallyreallyreally fast, I've been feeling all nostalgic about B & S. Loved it, too. And had a crush on Alastair on You Can't Do That On Television. Can't remember what he looks like; I really hope he wasn't actually a strange-looking goober....

Ahh. *waxes nostalgic*

Also back in the day when Nickelodeon stopped broadcasting at 6 pm. ;) I loved You Can't Do That On Television. And Danger Mouse, too.

holy cow! first of all, i used to be big into Les Miz in high school (saw it 4 times)... and even more obsessed with Phantom of the Opera. Very sad that Les Miz is closing in NY -- I was hoping to drag my husband to see it someday before it closed. Guess we'll have to go to London then. ;-)

and I was a huge Nick fan! Danger Mouse was my favorite, but my sister and I also watched You Can't Do That On Television, Double Dare, Belle & Sebastian, and Out of Control. Have you heard of the indie group "Belle & Sebastian?" Named after the show I believe -- they're from Scotland or the UK somewhere. They're amazing -- I have most of their albums.

I'm with you on the Les Mis mourning. It was the first Bway show I ever saw and the Theater District without it is going to be wierd.

I'm also with you on the love for "Tomorrow People", "You Can't Do That On Television" and "Belle & Sebastian" but I don't remember "The Third Eye". What was that one about?

I have seen exactly one episode of the show, and that's the one on which Peter Davison appeared as "Elmer", wearing horrible spandex shorts and an afro wig. It was so acutely embarrassing that I couldn't bear to watch the whole thing. I mean, I am a rabid Davison fan -- have been ever since he appeared as Tristan on ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, and don't even get me started on how much I loved him as the Fifth DOCTOR WHO -- but there are limits.

I am all about the Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout thing, though, as of course you know. *cues up "Cars and Girls" on WinAmp*

And that is probably conventionally believed to be the dorkiest episode of the show ever.

Of course, the bits where Dave Prowse played a half-naked robot are pretty much a hoot too.

And it is all about respecting The Finns, isn't it?
