Since I am now teaching college english, I clicked this with interest. And may I say, dude. The intended audience for this article has absolutely nothing to do with the type of class I am teaching. My english 101 class is full of grown-ups returning to school, most of whom have their college aged children giving them help in my class. ... I guess the point of this comment is: it just goes to show. Yes, that is a lame-o point, but there you have it. :P
You know, in retrospect, I probably should've made it clearer that what I found interesting and usefull was the application-to-college essay portion of the article, more than the "parents helping" part. But I definitely see your point...
I passed your link on to one of my little cousins in hopes that her parents would read it!
I spent a few days with them last week and her parents are out of control (her mother especially). The second I walked in the door I was bombarded with material (he r resume, photographs, test scores, essay questions) and asked my opinion (and for my commiseration) on all of them.
She shouldn't have too much trouble getting into her schools but her mother is going over the top with panic and the thing that really irritated me was that they've been typing (and no doubt writing) the stuff for her as my cousin is extremely busy with several hundred activities (all listed on her resume of course).
She hasn't written any of the essays yet but from the way her mother was talking about it it sounded like a family project. This really irritated me! I wrote my own essays, not because my mother didn't care but because it was for my application!
Anyway I will stop ranting in your journal. Just wanted to let you know that I passed the link on to a household where I think it is badly needed. Thank you!!
