May. 16th, 2002 05:07 pmthis is very interesting. Somewhat inaccurate in places, but interesting. It's sort of a meta-fandom analysis and it gets into some of the issues that have come up on HPfGU and in my real life this week - how could it not, with my RL friends learning of my hobby from the New York Times - well, at least I knew that it was likely they would - it wasn't a complete surprise...

Date: 2002-05-16 05:52 pm (UTC)I think one point the writer missed is the almost covert feeling I have about my fan fiction writing from a legal standpoint. I thought about writing a letter to the Times about the recent HP FA article, but I didn't want to draw attention to myself as a fan fiction writer for fear of possible prosecution. (Of course, if I were prosecuted, I would know who to call!)I believe that it's fair use, but I am just afraid of getting mixed up in stuff I just don't understand.
I think if it were crystal clear that this was something legal and acceptable then perhaps it wouldn't feel like something I need to be careful about.
Thanks again for pointing out this article...
