I'm not trying to rain on the collective parade of squeeing I see on my LJ friends, really. But what's the big deal? I used to work at a company that did affilate linking, and frankly, it's all about the money. I'm sure you know this. So what am I missing? Is it more difficult to be a WB affiliate than just filling out a form?

Honestly, I'd like to be excited and see this as some sign from On High that fanfic is acceptable, but I can't without more info.

The big deal is that they asked us, not that we have decided to join. In asking us they are saying that they are happy with the content of FictionAlley. In doing so WB is pratically saying that HP fanfic is fine by them.

I'd really like to believe that. I spoke to Cassie and Stacey about this earlier this evening, after this initial post, and explained further my thoughts.

I really would like to think that this is WB showing that they are approving of fanfic, but I honestly think it's more that they saw the article in the NYT, thought hey, here's an untapped market, and decided to go for it. I think they realize that they really don't have the resources to shut down fanfic sites, so instead, they want to make money off the the big ones. It's not a true acceptance. And I know that maybe that doesn't matter.

I hate to be a cynic, really. But I'm looking forward to the outcome of Friday's meeting and further info on all of this.

I am not sure if this shows that WB is supporting or just allowing fanfic (changing my mind slightly from earlier!), but I am not totally sure it matters. I have absolutely no doubt that they are in this to make money; that is very, very obvious given other things they have already done.

I just feel that things have not changed. I would be very surprised if WB has not been tracking the goings on in the HP fandom for a while and would be shocked if they only just found out about FA, having opened their collective copy of the NYT on Sunday. If they wanted to attempt to shut FA, or any other fanfic site down, they would have made the effort before now. It is just as you say, '...they realize that they really don't have the resources to shut down fanfic sites...'.

As long as FA gives no control over site content to WB things will still be the same, just with FA able to make a small amount of money to help cover costs. As I see it the worst that will happen is that they will change their mind and remove the affliate later on.

I am alos waiting for the reults of Friday, but have to do other things first!
