It seems that importing content to a community is not supported, and will not be (sigh, I think I need to ask for this) so when I tried to import the posts at it imported all my personal-journal posts, which I didn't want to do.

So I've asked them to wipe my DW journal - and that means I don't even know how long this post will be here, but I'll re-load my Recent Content on Sunday or Monday.

The reason they can't import community content is an IP issue-- they're operating on the assumption that a poster owns the content of their posts, and a community owner doesn't have the right to move posts that don't belong to them. There was a big long discussion about this already and I think the decision was that this was ethically iffy and therefore not going to happen.

I do understand the ethics issue, but there are communities out there that (a) are single-poster comms, like I have for my vids/fics, and those don't have the same issue, and there are other communities where it is entirely possible for all the posters to consent to move it over and those could be authorize-able, too.

I think the issue was also an openid one. Openid accounts can control their comments other people import, but they can't make posts so if you import a post someone else wrote they have no control over it.

Makes sense - but there is still a gap involving single-poster comms as well as comms where all the posters may agree to have the posts moved, and while I understand they are busy with a lot of other things right now, there's no ethics issue that would impact moving those types of comms over. Speaking personally, it makes it 99% unlikely that I would ever entirely move off LJ, because I can't move my pear_vodka comm over.

I wouldn't swear by this, but I think I read somewhere that they may down the road consider allowing one-user comms to be imported. Possibly in the comments of one of the official DW announcement communities, maybe. I think it was something that wasn't going to be high on their list of priorities (at least right now) though.

It won't happen before open beta, that's for sure -- my understanding is that they're focusing on cleanup on existing major (and minor) "does it work right and are the instructions clear" type bugs before next Thursday.

I also recall seeing that they might make an exception for single-user comms. Given how permissions on those posts work, it seems logical to think that it might end up related to setting up a parent/child relationship between DW account(s) and OpenID accounts from other sites.

Suffice to say, they are aware of the issue. They just want to make sure that if they enable comm imports, it's as Not Evil as possible.

(They are also being quite adamant that they don't want people to feel like they have to choose between LJ and/or clone sites, and DW. Just saying, I know it's not convenient, and many want to ditch LJ since two years ago, but it's not something M & D are advocating.)
