Did I really say this, back in Feb of 2001?
[If WB doesn't go after people who use the Harry Potter mark without their authorization] not only will there be dozens of HP sites (which the world could deal with) there would be unauthorized HP merchandise, and even possibly unauthorized books (which would be bad).

I wouldn't blame any of you if you never spoke to me again! "Dozens" of HP sites?

Wow, my predictive powers sucked.

This post brought to you by the letter "N" for Nostalgia.

So, anyone reading this who remembers when there were fewer than 1000 people on HPfGU?

This all came from looking for the original rules from HP for the Harry Potter Webmasters Web Ring.

WEB RINGS!!

And I found mentions of Homestead while on said hunt. Now, where did I put those ezBoards?

I honestly don't recall how many people we're on HPfGU when I joined--or when I joined, because that email account is long gone.

Heh, and I wonder how many of those sites were lost when GeoCities came down...

I don't know if there was less than 1000, but I could read all the emails posted every single day.

Haha. Yup. And I remember when Lori was still writing PoU - not the series, the first fanfic.

I joined HP4GU sometime in 2001 ... I think in August? I remember being on the list around the time of 9/11 so it was obviously before that. I have NO idea how many people were on it but I remember quickly going to digest view because I couldn't keep up.

At the time I joined HPfGU there were, I think, less than 400 members, and the group had just migrated from Yahoo!Clubs some months earlier. I found it from the PoU list, from when PoU and DD were still works in progress. I think I joined HPfGU before Ebony/AngieJ did.

If you didn't unsub that email account it's probably still subscribed - one of the ghosties.

I just peeked, and it seems the Homestead sites are still around! Go, AOL Time Warner, keeping the ancient remnants of the internet alive for another generation!

You could again now. It's slowed to 5-10 posts a day, on average.

It was beyond 2000 by that point, IIRC. God, what a terrible week that was. I'd met John and a bunch of other mods in NYC at Serendipity's nine days before, and then...

I did unsub it because it was my work email. I think I registered with my yahoo account in early 2002 or late 2001. I think I started lurking in Aug/Sept 2001. I was kind of overwhelmed and ran away from all the crazy. I don't think I registered at FA until 2002.

I just re-read PoU for kicks, and you know what? It still stands up as a classic.
