They just awarded Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize.

Has it ever been given to a head of state within 9 months of his or her taking office?

Oh, the right wingers' heads will explode! Can't wait to see how this is covered. Were there any rumors of this beforehand? And is a nobel better than bringing Olympics to Chicago?

(and since I'm being political, kudos to both Florida's senators for voting for Franken's bill that would strip govt contracts from companies that require binding arbitration for employees who are sexually assaulted at work. The 30 republicans who voted against it? I have no words for their vile-ness.)

(btw, still have not seen Show. I had a sleepless kid from 915 thru 230 am last night. No spoilers, please - except I know who the Guest Star was.)

Wow! That's amazing.

What did they base it on?

Edit: Oops, sorry. That should of course have been a reply to [livejournal.com profile] pinkfinty's post and not your comment. Sorry about that *embarrassed smiley*

Us, and the insomniacs on the West Coast. And had people in Hawaii even gone to bed yet? I am thrilled that the Honolulu paper may actually manage to get it on the morning's front page. It's early enough out there.

Ooooh, I cannot wait to listen to Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz today!

I was awakened early and wanted to go back to sleep and checked my email and saw the CNN alert and it was almost impossible to go to sleep after that!

I was just talking to Lars about it. Part of us think it was perhaps a bit too soon to say, the other part thinks that any president who isn't GWB is an improvement on the chances for world peace ;)

What? Seriously? (I mean, wait for him to do something big first. Slow year?) Not that I'm objecting, per se, but, huh?

i can sort of understand why people would think they should have waited longer, but i think this is an affirmation of peace and diplomacy over paranoia and war. america looms huge on the international landscape, and having the majority of the world hate and fear us for eight years was horrible and dangerous, not just for us but for the whole global climate. obama, just by being himself, has brought a candor, openness, and empathy to the office that i've never had the privilege of seeing before in my lifetime -- say what you will about the issues facing us domestically, but he's doing the best he can with the perfunctorily disagreeable republicans, and i think this decision is a very sound one. obama is one of the good guys and should be treated as such -- maybe this will make some of the people at home realize just how good this guy is for our nation and our planet.

in other words, SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!

I, of course am very pleased! Especially since this knocks out those a-holes who were so smug about Obama being unable to snag the Olympic bid. "The beginning of the end" they called it. ::RAZZZZZ::

I can understand the controversy too. But just being willing to bring those ideals to the table and inspire the world toward peace, better relations and climate change is an accomplishment in itself. The prize promotes that. So give it to him!

I was kind of wondering what they awarded it for. I mean, they had to do the nomination process months ago, before he'd completed his first 100 days, so I'm mainly just ... kind of confused! What had he done, at the time of nomination, that they awarded it? LOL, though I think he said something in his acceptance speach about him applying it towards stuff he hoped to do.

Anyhow. Politics confuse me, and so did this prize. I'm simple that way. ;-)

Ditto. He gave most the rest of the planet a chance to sigh in relief, and Hawaii and Kenya (and that one town in Japan) a big reason to celebrate in a way they've never done before. It's the potential, not the specific achievements.

Rachel Maddow did a great 11 minutes on this, as soon as I find the transcript for the video-impaired I'll post it.
