Q&A with Tom Felton:

How did you approach the character?

We took the time, with David, to work on the script, particularly on the final scene with Michael Gambon, but also on the relationship between Snape and Draco. We read the script, we took notes, and we discussed Draco’s state of mind in those different scenes. His father’s absence made Draco a more complex character; in the beginning, I was probably too one-dimensional in my approach but David gave it real depth. Draco isn’t focused on Harry anymore: he has a mission now, and it really brought something more to the character. Also in the same way we understand Harry’s reactions toward what he’s lived through and the absence of his parents, we begin to understand that Draco isn’t all that bad and that his actions and attitude were really influenced by his father and the way he treats him. There is therefore more research, emotion, subtlety…

Back before OotP came out, I had a bet with someone on HPfGU that Draco wasn't actually evil, and that sometime before the end of the series he would do something that was obviously and definitely The Right Thing to Do - ie more than the issue of interpritation as to whether finking on students out of bed after hours in the presence of an illegal dragon is the right thing to do under wizarding law, or whether telling Hermione how to get away from the Death Eaters at the Quidditch World Cup was the right thing to do - I've seen arguments both ways...

Lying about whether it was Harry at Malfoy Manor, trying to save Crabbe, not killing Dumbledore in the first place - I think it turned out there were multiple things, and I know JKR doesn't like him but sometimes I really wonder if his character arc went a different way from what she'd originally planned and that's why he and Harry are nodding to each other in the Epilogue, even if he's balding.

Oooh, should I have warned for DH spoilers?
