I'm posting this and dashing back to finish packing, and I'm on a plane half of tomorrow, but I wanted to make a quick comment re Laura Hale/Michela/PartlyBouncy/PurplePopple. Note: I'm not linking to her or even incorporating her actual usernames because as I learned years ago, she has clear gifs on her pages and her wiki and tracks where things come from, and I don't think anything needs to go directly from my LJ to anything connected to her.

Back in 2001, she emailed my law firm, as she posted on her voy forums (they're still public):

I e-mailed the firm Heidi was at and ASKED if what she said was legally sound... (They remember that too. Shortly after it, Heidi moved to NY I think...)

Date Posted: 13:55:46 09/09/02 Mon
Author: Laura

(Note: I didn't move to NY after that, although I had lived there three-plus years before. And I didn't leave the firm. But it sounds like she thinks I was fired because of her email or because I was discussing copyright laws online - and I wasn't.)

Five years later, in the middle of the whole bad penny kerfuffles, she registered the domain name heidi[insertlastname].com and pointed it to her fanhistory page about me, where she also used my real name. I believe that both of these acts were unethical - but that's not why I'm reiterating them now.

It clearly shows a pattern of using real names linked to fannish names/pseuds in connection with people she dislikes. This isn't something she thought of because some OTW members use their real names in connection with the nonprofit, while still participating in fannish interaction under pseudonyms. This is a standard practice for her and I personally would find it reprehensible even if she hadn't used it to hurt me.

ETA: Someone just sent me a link to this where Laura seems to be trying to sell fanhistory. The whole site.

Huh. WTF? Ew.

ETA2 There's something much cheerier here - [livejournal.com profile] caffienekitty's The Henchmans' Union's "So You're Evil, Now What?" Introductory Package from Doctor Horrible. The perfect cheer-up!

ETA on October 29, 2008 to redact my last name so I can make this public.

UGH. I saw they were editing your last name out of many pages. *facepalm*

FH is a terrible resource and I have no idea why she thinks anyone would buy it from her.

Are they?

Cool! Also, it's about fucking time.

At this point, I generally shrug about it, but it's just so damned tacky.

Oh, fannish history, you are a bizarre little creature.

Yes, White Serpent told me she went through and edited your last name out. She did it on my page under [livejournal.com profile] ari_o. It is weird that the page has been edited like a dozen times but with very little change. And all it says is wank related tangent stuff. Nothing about who I actually am or what I have actually done. And I'm just fine with that.

It is tacky. And she is a moron.

Since 99% of the pages I have ever visited on FH are nothing more than a list of the fics people have archived on FF.net, I can't imagine anyone but Xing (maybe) being interested in purchasing it.

She so crazy.

That's because she has a bot harvesting everybody who's ever posted fic on ff.net.

Because, you know, that's an important part of understanding fandom history.

Right I had hoped that meant there would be no entry for me because I never posted fic on FFN. No such luck. :/

Were you around when a large percentage of the fics on the HP section of FFN were Harry Potter/Pokemon crossovers?

Nifty. Maybe it'll move out of the google-rankings within the next few months - unless Michela puts them back in?

Sorry, I know I sound a little pessimistic about it. And I really don't want to!

FH is a terrible resource and I have no idea why she thinks anyone would buy it from her.

Because she's nuts?

Did I say that outloud?

I actually got my LJ code from her way back when. I didn't know anything about her but she posted on SQ she had codes up for grabs so I PMed her asking for one. She gave me one and so I thanked her in another PM which she ignored. Then a few postings later she went on this whole big whine fest about how everyone she gave codes to was rude and didn't acknowledge her. I PMed her again (because I thought she never got my original PM) and then checked to see later if it had been read. Both of my PMs thanking her had been read. THEN she posted another thing a day or so later about how everyone was rude and wasn't thanking her.

I pretty much decided she was a nut after that. Everytime her name comes up I have to laugh because I remember how she did that ... weird.

If you didn't sound pessimistic in this instance I would worry. I have never understood what her problem is -- besides the fact that she is nuts.

FH doesn't come up until bottom of 3rd page on google.

I've never posted there either, but if I have a page (I haven't looked because I don't want to add to her hit count), it's because of my OTW involvement. If she wants somebody there, she'll find a way...somehow.

*sigh*

Yeah, I know she has a hard on for OTW--but at least it is something cool you are doing. The only reasons she slapped me up there is because of wank. Er, I think she mentioned I was an FAP mod in the Pleistocene era too. *facepalm*

Her initial anger at me dates from me not being able to beta read a paper she was writing for a college class on fanfic and law in May of 2001 - because I was busy with my sister and Brian's wedding. A month later when Cassiegate happened she was thus already pissed at me because I'd blown her off, or something, so emailing my law firm may have been an "outlet" for her indignation?

The first few weeks that she was on hpfgu-otchatter (all the posts are still on that yahoogroup, btw) we got along fine!

How's that for fandom history?

I understand that it's common courtesy not to "out" fans by posting their real names, but if the fan is or becomes a public figure like Astolat (whose RL identity is an open secret), would they have the same reasonable expectation of privacy that a lesser-known fan would? Yes, this is a quasi-legal question, but something I've been wondering about. For example, if Barack Obama had written Starsky/Hutch slash back in the day, undoubtedly we'd all know about it by now.

I think I'll hold off of the bubbly until the other shoe drops. Because there is no way this is just going to die down. Between us publicly thwapping her and eliminating a strategic part of her marketing plan, the all round fandom condemnation, and now a link-backless fandom wank, she's apparently gone aground and is feeling persecuted. That's never good.

Oh, it will drop. I saw someone mention her twitter that she's looking for PR help, so I'm sure she'll try to formulate a response of some sort. But it's hard to get your credibility back, especially when you've said so much publicly. But that doesn't mean she won't try.
