So how does it end?
Jun. 18th, 2008 07:56 amOver dinner with
kitsune13 the other night, we talked about how we want Supernatural to end, as a tv series. I said I wanted the last scene to be the boys at the trunk of a very souped-up and yet still recognizable Flying Impala, with a date-line that says 2249, looking barely older than they did in the previous scene, tossing in some funky laser blaster and possibly a light saber, saying, in unison, "We've still got work to do." Basically, a version of what
lyra_wing wrote in Dust in the Wind. But perhaps with slightly more Led Zep playing in the fade to black.
I don't have any sort of idealized version of how I'd love to see Heroes end some future time years from now, and Doctor Who will never end, and I know how Jack Harkness's story ends - or so I think! - but I'm wondering:
How do you want your favorite series to end? What do you want to see in the last episode, the last scene, the last frame even? Marriage, death, babies? Rocket ships, armageddon, a sunset or a sunrise? What's the dialogue, who are the characters, and is there a happily ever after? Or do you want it to be rocks fall; everyone dies?

For current shows, I keep thinking of things like, House and Wilson finally snog, or Johna and Rodney finally snog (I think the former is more likely - in a continuum of unlikely events).
But here's one: in the final episode of Stargate Atlantis, john and Rodney wake up in those pods from "Aurora" - turns out they've been there the whole time. They get back to Atlantis and Elizabeth and Carson are still alive and wondering where the hell they got to. It's also now the commercial hub of the Pegasus galaxy and the Wraith are dead and everyone on Earth knows about aliens.
Oh, and gay in the army is okay, as is gay marriage, so they get married. The end. ;)

Date: 2008-06-18 12:57 pm (UTC)Of course, I want the final American Idol to feature Simon and Ryan snogging. I mean, they've already had their African honeymoon, and That Kiss, and exec producer Nigel ships them, so I would be really satisfied if that happened. I wouldn't want any of the four of them to leave and be replaced; I would just want the show to end. We'll see what happens in two years!

Date: 2008-06-18 04:35 pm (UTC)I measure most series finales against The West Wing's. Of course, that would mean watching Bobby die. I think he's definitely the Leo character to Dean's Josh. Which would make Sam...um...Sam. But pre-Congress Sam. And CJ is definitely Ellen. Which would make Jo Annabeth. *snork* Oooh, and Ruby is totally Lou.
Aaaanyway. I think I'd like to see a little fast forward. Not flying Impala fast forward ^_^, but still.
Maybe Sam finally got his law degree and now he works for Legal Aid in a big city somewhere. Dean's opened a garage where he restores classic cars for an exorbitant fee. They kill evil sons of bitches on the weekends. And their women, if they're in the picture, are badass too, of course. Maybe Dean mentors the new generation, Bobby style. Something bittersweet, but definitely with the boys ALIVE, Jared, jeez.

Perfect SPN ending, Dean and Sam in the Impala and we watch them drive away to their next case.

Date: 2008-06-18 08:06 pm (UTC)I like your idea (of how Supernatural should end).
I hated the X-files' ending because it wasn't just "oh, there's more work to do," it was "OH MY GOD WE'RE ON THE RUN AND THE ALIENS ARE GOING TO INVADE!!! but YOU'LL NEVER GET TO SEE THEM INVADE BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANOTHER CONSPIRACY-ARC MOVIE!" And there hasn't even been any good fanfiction written post-the end, so that was just a total failure.
I think there's something to be said for the somewhat open ended, but not totally open ended, ending. Wherever there's an ongoing project, it's okay to say that that project isn't finished in the last episode - because if it's finished, we all just want to know what happens next. But, things like romance, etc. should be to some extent resolved. I'm a big fan of having a lot of UST throughout the series and only resolving it in the last ep.
