Late Thursday, I wrote a Supernatural fic focused on Ava set just before the events in 2.21 (and spoilery for that episode) which involved a devil's food cake. I can't find my exact recipe, but this is pretty close - I use dark chocolate instead of cocoa, but otherwise it's the same - and the sour cream makes a difference.

So will basically create the cake Ava has in the fic...

* 1 1/2 cups sugar
* 1/2 cup butter
* 2 eggs
* 3/4 cup sour cream or buttermilk
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 2 cups all-purpose flour, stirred or sifted before measuring
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 1/2 cup cocoa mixed with 1/2 cup hot water

PREPARATION:
In a mixing bowl cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add beaten eggs.

Sift flour into a separate bowl together with baking powder. Stir baking soda into sour cream. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with the sour cream mixture, beating well after each addition. Beat in salt, vanilla, and cocoa-hot water mixture, beating well after each addition.

Spoon into two greased and floured 9-inch layer cake pans. Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes. Frost with chocolate or fluffy white frosting, or your favorite.
