Oct. 7th, 2005 06:14 amI'm at the airport after running through the rain to my car. So much for freshly blow-dried hair! And my suitcase has a sticky wheel so I'm off to see if I can get something for that, but in general everything is going well enough. I'm an hour early, but for me that's less nerve-wracking than rushing.
This is the first time I've flown alone in over three years - June of 2002, when I went to NYC and had bagels with Cassie and Penny, saw the CoS trailer with Cassie and Ali, and actually got carded in Little Italy.
I'm not sure I remember how. How to read a magazine or listen to music on a plane - I've never been able to listen to an iPod on a flight - their whole existence post-dates my last solo flight.
I used to fly like taking the bus. When I was in law school in DC, dating Aaron who lived in NYC, I wasn't yet 25, and shuttle tickets on Trump outside peak hours were $40 each, each way, and I came up to nyc three weekends out of four, in my last semester. My goals were three:
1. Get to NYC
2. Do it un under two hours from my door to aaron's - I managed it *once*.
3. Get enough magazines and newspapers from the free selection to pay for the trip - very easy on Tuesday morning flights home, less so on Thursday evening flights up.
Now, I'm not a very good flyer anymore. I try to be outwardly calm for my kids because I know a lot of my fear was from watching my mom when we flew. She, who now has nearly two million miles flown and permanent gold member status. She is no longer a nervous flyer.
I am now, again. I kissed my kids this morning - everyone slept through the night, which was a stunner - and pray I'll see them again tomorrow night when I come back from my whirlwind in Salem.
And soon I'll see many of you. Soon, after I have a seat to myself, with my diet coke, iPod and magazines.
