Quick Dr Who S1 finale review

I don't love the Bad Wolf explanation - is there more on it in S2, or was that it?
Nine's final speech was glorious, and while I apreciate Ecclestone's verve and looks, having watched S2 eps, when he spoke of his "daft old face", I couldn't help but think, "and I'll be ever so very much hotter!"
Was it planned from the start that Nine would be a single-season Doctor? If not, when did that become definite?
Must go back and watch again on dvr, yay. Then I can finally catch up on last week's download of S2...
