[livejournal.com profile] peacockharpy, [livejournal.com profile] likebunnies and Carole - I hope you're all hunkering down for the storm - let me know if any of you want to flee to Miami Beach.

Yes, we here in Miami are within the Cone of Doom, but the projected path
, which means that we will get something stormy here, but it would have to take a serious jog to actually hit Miami with hurricane-force winds.

But it could, so we are stocked with water and protein bars and examining if we want to go inland, but really, there is nowhere that we can flee to, without a plane, right now.

So, now, why didn't they call this storm UNCLE?!?

ETA
From the Sun Sentinal's Hurricane Blog:
With a 175 mph hurricane heading straight for South Florida, here's the only good news I can find about Hurricane Wilma:

1. Wind shear and the westerlies will probably weaken Hurricane Wilma after it reaches the Gulf of Mexico, so Florida won't get 175 mph winds.

2. The storm is small and compact and the hurricane force winds only extend 15 miles from the center.

3. Hurricane Wilma is expected to move faster before reaching Florida, so it shouldn't have a chance to dump too much rain on the region.

Of course, all this can change in the next few days as the forecast solidifies. Now is a good day to review your hurricane plans and make sure you have water, food and supplies ready.

Sitting in Orlando watching the path of Wilma and thinking it looks a lot like Charlie's path. EEeekk!

Good thing I got the protein bars yesterday - I think the stores might be out today.

I think a plane sounds like a great idea!

Oh shit. I hope it weakens substantially-- I heard on NPR this morning that it was at a level 5. I hate hurricane season! Please keep us updated if you can.

Eeep!

A category 5 is, well a category 5, no matter how slender. Sending good thoughts and wishes to you and all my friends in Wilma's path. Stay safe.

Then they said "Wilma also grew into a larger storm today, with hurricane-force winds stretching out up to 50 miles from its center, up from 15 miles earlier in the day."

I refuse to be intimidated by a hurricane named after a Flintstone.

Also, it's really adorable that you highlight in pink.

:::waves::: We're thinking of getting out of Dodge and heading for the bro in laws in Atlanta. I don't like the looks of this one and I don't like the projected path. We're at an elevation of only 20 feet with the Manatee River (direct connection to the gulf) only 2 miles away. I'm doing some shopping and packing tonight, so I'll be ready if we have to go and ready is we don't.

Our side of the street is in the first evacuation zone, the people across the street (less than 100 feet away) are in no evacuation zone...go figure...urgh.

Good luck on your side of the state. It does look an awful lot like Charlie, but bigger and meaner. And you're right..there is nowhere to go in FL that would be safe for sure.

We'll keep you posted...maybe I'll even make an LJ post...haven't done that since June...hmmmmm

I think people would feel reassured if you did. And if you want to come down here, we have some available, gratis, hotel rooms. I'd just need to know soonish so we can hold them.

The trouble with it moving across the state quickly is that it will still be pretty much the same strength when it hits the East Coast. :-\

We are actually in Orlando at the moment... (A great big hurricane is coming! WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GO? Disney World!)

We might have to go home early, though, if Mr. PH needs to batten down the hatches for his workplace (he is responsible for storm preparation for the IT department. eep.). If it really is swinging northward, I'm headed to one of the inland relatives' houses.

I've been wondering about you!

Heidi's got my contact info if you find you need a hand when you get back - I'll see what I can manage if needed.
