Jon jumped out of his crib tonight. Since he ran down the hall to find me immediately after, it seems like he's quite fine, but I kept him up for an hour anyway.

So, what do I do now? Get him a toddler bed? Drop the side on this all the way? Put a mattress on the floor next to the crib? Harry didn't climb out until he was 23 months old - jon's not yet 18 months. Wibble.

What is it with second children? Rachel did that when she was only nine months old. (She started walking at ten months; Ben was fourteen months and he never did the climbing-out-of-the-crib thing.) She started crawling around her room and also did some cruising by holding onto things. She wasn't hurt at all but it made a HORRENDOUS sound as her room is right over ours. She was just a little monkey, that's all there was to it. The mattress was lowered as far as we could get it, too. We just had to make sure she couldn't get hold of anything in her room that we'd previously assumed she couldn't get at and thoroughly lock her door so that she couldn't get into the hall and then fall down the stairs or anything. (We had a gate at the door to the family room, not at the top of the stairs.)

I think the only thing you can really do is make the house safe and count yourselves lucky that he didn't do it earlier. ;) But getting a toddler bed or a twin bed with a bedrail might be a good way to go.

Karolyn jumped at 15 months. We tried the mattress on the floor for a while, but she wouldn't stay. We ended up just getting a king-sized bed so she could join us until she was able to stay in her own room (which took about 6 months or so). We had baby gates corralling her into our room so she couldn't go anywhere else.

They make net tents you can put over the top of the crib to keep him in.

Barring that, I vote for the mattress-on-the-floor/toddler bed. I know at least one family who has had to do that.

Nate and Kellie started climing out soon after they learned to walk. We just got the toddler beds right away.

We have a crib tent thing that attaches very securely to the top of the crib. We originally got it to protect Meg against the cats, but the cats have never made an attempt to get in the crib, so we put it aside, to save it until she starts jumping out of her crib. Maybe you could get one of those, if you think Jon's not ready for a toddler bed yet?

(And I see that Jon is still living up to his original name of "Jumper"... *grin*)

We had a crib that was like Ft. Knox. It was one of those cribs that turned into a toddler bed so the mattress dropped way down low and the sides were impossible to climb. The kid tried many times and never made it out. I loved that crib.

We got a toddler bed for our daughter after finding her straddling the rail (which was pulled all the way up) at 18 months. She still sleeps in it at 32 months.

I vote for the toddler bed. I remember when my sister got old enough to climb out my parents just got her a toddler bed, and then put those baby gates up in front of her door so she couldn't go anywhere else.

Both my brother and I were infamous for crib escapes. I, being the first child, never had anything to break my fall and fell flat on my face once (and luckily DIDN'T break my nose...), so with my brother, they shoved a bean bag chair under the edge of the crib. That way, when he decided to make an escape, there was something to break his fall.

Emily started climbing out of her cot (I presume that's the same as a crib?) when she was about 13 months old. We dropped the side down as low as it would go, so she wouldn't injure herself and did put a mattress next to it. But,after that, she seemed to lose interest and we had a lot of trouble helping her make the transition from cot to bed. She clearly liked the challenge, and once that was taken away she was content to stay there!

I'd try different tactics and see what best suits your escapologist!

I'd get the toddler bed. My youngest brother gave himself a lot of bumps on his head once he worked out how to climb out.

We wound up puttin my daughter in an adult (full size bed) when she learned to walk. She wouldn't sleep in a todler bed, wouldn't even look at it. We just put a baby gate up in her door and put a step stool by the bed. She's never complained about going to bed since (and she's 4 now).

Unless you've already got a toddler bed, I'd swap straight to an adult bed and use a small step and a bed-guard along the open edge; and then a baby gate at the bedroom door. My #'s 2,3, and 4 all walked/climbed earlier and earlier than #1, but they never came to any harm being in a proper-sized bed early either.

Where's Teh Bebe going to sleep? Don't you need the crib for her? If you do, I'd say take advantage of this and move Jon on up. We never did toddler beds, we just moved the kids straight into adult beds (which was sometimes nice if we ended up crashing out with them for a bit if somebody was having a bad sleep night).

I coslept (still do most nights, ARGH) with Jamie, but on the rare occasions he did sleep alone, I just put a mattress on the floor. Toddler bed with rails would work, but the mattress works better. Just take off the side of his crib.

speaking as a non-parent, is it ok to think that his coming to find you was kind of cute? like saying "look what I can do?" :D

of course, this is coming from someone who told my neighbor's mother to "watch me" when I was about 3 or 4 and flipping over the patio bannister -- I ended up with a broken wrist ;[

and climbing knows no age limits -- I remember we found my baby sister sitting on the kitchen counter when she was about 2 or 3. it took us forever to figure out that she had climbed up using the drawers b/c they were *just barely* pulled out...

um, sorry, no helpful advice, just memories to share!

My brother did that. I think my parents were less concerned with him injuring himself getting out of the crib and more worried about him breaking his neck by tripping on the stairs. They solved that by locking him in his room at night (they had the room next to his so they could hear him if he needed out).

That sounds so incredibly cruel doesn't it? LOL

Oh and a baby gate didn't work because he knew how to free himself from those.

He's the second child too.

My daughter did that when she was 16 mo old. Started pulling herself up on her arms and getting a leg over the rails, just like that.
