Nov. 1st, 2004 09:35 amOne more day before the storm...
So when we went to the Kerry rally last Friday night, before the Real Show started, they were playing great tunes, including Jesus Jones' Right Here, Right Now, which was, for me, the song from the 1992 campaign. If you don't know the lyrics,
A woman on the radio talked about revolution
when it's already passed her by
Bob Dylan didn't have this to sing about you
you know it feels good to be alive
I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up from history
I saw the decade in, when it seemed
the world could change at the blink of an eye
And if anything
then there's your sign... of the times
I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up from history
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up from history
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up....
I'd been thinking these past few days about putting together a mix on my iPod to listen to on the way to the poll where I'm poll lawyering tomorrow morning, and these are the songs I have on it, and why (note: if you want an mp3 of one of the ones I didn't download from iTunes, let me know - if you want to see the lyrics, if you reply before about four this afternoon, eastern time, I'll be able to paste them in as a reply):
No Surrender - Bruce Springsteen - because it's the song for the campaign
Beautiful Day - U2 - because I have a reason to be overoptimistic
Walk On - U2 - because this song is what reminds me of the sadness of 9/11, and the Bush administration and campaign's politicization of that attack is one of the major reasons why I despise said administration and campaign
Right Here, Right Now - Jesus Jones - see above
All I Want - Toad The Wet Sprocket - it is my "moment of zen" ("And it won’t matter now, Whatever happens will be, Though the air speaks of all we’ll never be, It won’t trouble me")
Let The River Run - Carley Simon - this was one of our wedding songs, and it always makes my heart stir. I listened to it on my way to my first day of work when I was at Stroock in NYC, which is down the street from the World Trade Center, and it speaks of New York to me.
Goodbye To You - Scandal
Yeah, I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holding on
The days are dull, the nights are long
Guess it's better to say
Goodbye to you
Minority - Green Day - because I don't want to be the minority, and I don't think that I have been in the last four years, and I think that people have startened to understand that now.
Breakout - Swing Out Sister - because we have to. We just have to.
Won't Give In - Finn Brothers (Neil & Tim, for those who didn't know about the new iteration of the act)
The End of the Innocence - Don Henley - you can hear some of it, which I used to make a video about the first Gulf War back in 1991, here.
We Walk The Same Line - Everything But The Girl - because it begins, "If you lose your faith, babe, you can have mine..."
The Red Flag, Aztec Camera version - because I am not a socialist, nor will I ever be, but sometimes, you just have to look to movements of the past and respect their devotion, and channel it
Someday, I Suppose - Mighty Mighty Bosstones - because sometimes, you just need to get keyed up
God Give Me Strength - Elvis Costello - because I am just unable to continue listening to One Day More at this point
These Are Days - 10,000 Maniacs - again, this song was one of the ones I played constantly, and
And last on my list is Good Riddance by Green Day - Hey, George? I hope you've had the time of your life. Your run is almost done.
Anyone have anything to add? Suggestions welcome.

Minority - Green Day - because I don't want to be the minority, and I don't think that I have been in the last four years, and I think that people have startened to understand that now.
One light, one mind
Flashing in the dark
Blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts
"For crying out loud" she screamed unto me
A free for all
Fuck 'em all
You are your own might.
Breakout - Swing Out Sister - because we have to. We just have to.
Won't Give In - Finn Brothers (Neil & Tim, for those who didn't know about the new iteration of the act)

These Are Days - 10,000 Maniacs - again, this song was one of the ones I played constantly, and
These are the days
These are days you’ll remember
Never before and never since, I promise
Will the whole world be warm as this
And as you feel it,
You’ll know it’s true
That you are blessed and lucky
It’s true that you
Are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you
These are days that you’ll remember
When May is rushing over you
With desire to be part of the miracles
You see in every hour
You’ll know it’s true
That you are blessed and lucky
It’s true that you are touched
By something that will grow and bloom in you
These are days
These are the days you might fill
With laughter until you break
These days you might feel
A shaft of light
Make its way across your face
And when you do
Then you’ll know how it was meant to be
See the signs and know their meaning
It's true
Then you’ll know how it was meant to be
Hear the signs and know they’re speaking
To you, to you
And last on my list is Good Riddance by Green Day - Hey, George? I hope you've had the time of your life. Your run is almost done.
Anyone have anything to add? Suggestions welcome.

Date: 2004-11-01 07:13 am (UTC)As Mark Maron is fond of saying "We're fighting for our lives here!"
Go fight the good fight for all of us, my dear. I'll be stranded at work and rehearsal all day long (rehearsal doesn't end until 9:30PM!) checking up on the progress however I can. Just signed up at Rock the Vote for text messaging updates to my cell.
If you can spare a text or two during the evening for a poor soul who never thought for a moment that a rehearsal would be scheduled on election day, my cell is 847-224-3095. My one Democrat friend in the play and I are going to be nibbling our nails down to the quick all night long.
Kerry in a landslide!

Date: 2004-11-01 07:36 am (UTC)I have been listening to a lot of Fortunate Son, by Creedence Clearwater Revival. But something that really struck me lately is Megalomaniac by Incubus. I would link you to the lyrics but none of them are right (I'm old fashioned and actually have the CD) so I'll put them here:
I hear you on the radio
You permeate my screen.
It's unkind, but
If I met you in a scissor fight
I'd cut off both your wings
On principle alone.
Hey! Megalomaniac! You're no Jesus! Yeah, you're no fucking Elvis!
Wash your hands clean of yourself baby and step down! Step down! Step Down!
If I were your appendages
I'd hold open your eyes
So you'd see
That all of us are heaven sent.
And there was never meant
To be only one.
Hey! Megalomaniac! You're no Jesus! Yeah, you're no fucking Elvis!
Wash your hands clean of yourself baby
And step down!
Step down!
Step down!
You're no Jesus. You're no Elvis. You're no answer.

Date: 2004-11-01 08:06 am (UTC)I've now also got a severe case of nerves about this election like I haven't had in all the months leading up to now. Until now, it was all hopes and crossing fingers and cursing out Bush; now, I'm scared it's all going to fall apart at the end, it's just that freakin' way too close.

Date: 2004-11-01 08:19 am (UTC)Damn. I still don't have an iPod, but I'm going to make a playlist to listen to on my computer, anyway. I have most of the songs you've listed here, and I like them. :) WAH GULF WAR SONG. Makes me cry--but d00d! Another Fruvous fan!

Date: 2004-11-01 08:38 am (UTC)And I love that Jesus Jones song. I wish I'd been more into early-90s music; I'd hear a song on the radio and never find out the name of it *headdesk*

Date: 2004-11-01 12:32 pm (UTC)Maybe you (or someone) can answer a question I have?
When Conservatives bash the African-American community for almost complete support for the Democrats, why can't the same be said for the military? There have been Democrats who have been better for the military over the years than a lot of GOP Presidents (the one in office comes to mind). Why do those in the military overwhelmingly support a Republican just because they're Republican? And why don't the Conservatives ask that as well? :) (Ok, the last question was rhetorical LOL)

Good call on the Jesus Jones, btw. I haven't heard that song in ages. ^_^

Date: 2004-11-01 07:00 pm (UTC)and i'll tell you what, while we're at it
you can keep the pentagon
keep the propaganda
keep each and every tv
that's been trying to convince me
to participate
in some prep school punk's plan to perpetuate retribution
perpetuate retribution
even as the blue toxic smoke of our lesson in retribution
is still hanging in the air
and there's ash on our shoes
and there's ash in our hair
...
cuz take away our playstations
and we are a third world nation
under the thumb of some blue blood royal son
who stole the oval office and that phony election
i mean
it don't take a weatherman
to look around and see the weather
jeb said he'd deliver florida, folks
and boy did he ever
and we hold these truths to be self evident:
#1 george w. bush is not president
#2 america is not a true democracy
#3 the media is not fooling me
