Back in March, Neville posted on FA, "Ginny can also stand for Ginevra. Not long ago, I read an Agatha Christie book, in which there was also a character called Ginny, and her full name was Ginevra Boynton."

Also of interest are a number of posts in the Ginny's Real Name thread in OBHWF.

Here's the original post about Sirius being "dead sexy" (and woe! we didn't know she meant "dead" literally back in 2000!), made on HpfGU back in August of 2000 - click here.

I remember that thread. *g* I posted one time only to it and stated what I still believe.

McGonagall has never once called her or referred to her anything but Ginny. If stodgy old McGonagall, who has never used a nickname for any student in all the books, thinks the girl's name is Ginny, that's good enough for me.

The only exception to this (which I just thought of) would be if, for some strange reason, her full name was being kept secret.

But I'm still of the general opinion that Ginny is just Ginny.

It IS weird that she is giving out this information now, since previously it seemed that she was actively avoiding telling the readers this, as though it were some kind of state secret. (Which just fueled people's interest in it, as that must have meant that it was of EXTREME SIGNIFICANCE in the grand scheme of things.)

I think I may be even more underwhelmed than I was about "Bilius" for Ron's middle name, although at least "Ginevra Molly Weasley" sounds marginally better than "Ginny Molly Weasley" or "Virginia Molly Weasley." It was also of concern to a few folks that "Virginia Molly" has the unfortunate meaning of "Virgin Mary." ;)

Interesting - I just read the bit on JKR's page about Ginny's name. I stand (or sit) corrected. *g*

Although I *do* want to know why it's never been mentioned before.

And would someone throw that durned dog a bone? Took me about 10 minutes to realize I could turn off the radio.
