*coughs* Well, er, that clears a few things up.

And I'm even modding in SCUSA and I didn't - oh bah. *facepalm*

-Kala, who never even knew 'scuba' was an abbreviation.

*g* Maybe I should be a mod at FAP. I knew where SCUSA came from almost from the beginning.

;->

Oh, and I'm not a blonde.

I made the connection. Or rather, I think I had the connection made for me. Didn't the forum description used to say "Self Contained Underwater Shipping Apparatus"?

Oh wait. It still says that. You mean people don't know that SCUBA stands for "Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus"? Geesh...I bet they don't know what "posh" or "tip" stands for either...

What *does* 'tip' stand for? No, I didn't know it was an acronym. And given that posh and 'scuba' aren't ever written in all caps (unlike, say, AIDS or SARS), there's no way to otherwise know they were ever acronyms unless someone tells you. I only learned about 'posh' ... hmmm... a few years back.

This sounds really stupid, but I've been merrily mentally reading SCUSA as SCUBA the last two years.

Until now.

Heidi, I wonder if you can answer this question. I sent in a Niffler application and have received back neither Yea nor Nay. Do you not inform rejected applicants, is there something wrong with my email, or has an email simply not been sent yet?

"To Insure Promptness".

Other acronyms that many people have forgotten about:

LASER = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
SONAR = SOund Navigation And Ranging
RADAR = RAdio Detection And Ranging

And a lot of acronyms lose their capitalization when they enter common use. We usually write laser, sonar, and radar, for example.

Port Out, Starboard Home.

The link suggests that the acronym is likely apocryphal, which I think is probably true. But even false acronyms are nice to know, because references to them come up often in popular culture. Plus, you can impress your friends with them. ;)

A similar example is "Fuck", which, depending on whom you ask, stands for either "Forced Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" or "Fornication Under Command of King". Both of these are extremely unlikely. But that didn't stop Van Halen from putting out an album called "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge".

I had a very interesting teacher when I was in college.

He was trying to get a point across one day about "fornication" (his word specifically) and wrote on the blackboard:

Fraudulent Use of Carnal Knowledge

Being the silly little naive and sheltered twit that I was(sometimes still am), it took me several minutes to see what the rest of the class had been laughing about almost from the time he wrote the fifth word.....
