Just made a poll to gague general interest in OoTP. Please vote.
Poll has been edited. 7:42pm Eastern Time

Don't know if this makes sense, but...

*reads the poll a few times*

I'm not sure if my view actually comes under any of the options. I was going to read OotP before I discovered fanfic, and while I still read fanfic, it hasn't made me want to read OotP any more or less. I wish to read the rest of the Harry Potter series when it appears in the shops based upon my love of the previous books, so I'm not either encouraged or discouraged by fanfic. So if there was a "I'll read it when it comes out, regardless of my fanfic reading habits" then I'd tick that box.

I would read it, whether HP fanfic existed or not. There are other books/movies/series that do not have fanfic that I also breathlessly await. But that isn't a poll option.

Yes, I have the same problem. I want my poll choice to reflect my fanfic-reading-ness, but I would have been one of the people running out to buy the book within the week it comes out even if I'd never found fandom.

In fact, I'd say my choice would be more like, "I'm just as excited as I ever was, and that's part of why I originally found fanfic, but my huge interest in OotP is independent from my love of fanfic."

I will say, though, that I'm more likely to buy and read it *asap* when it comes out because of fanfic... simply because everyone else in fandom will be too, and I don't want to have to stay off LJ and lists for weeks. :)

What they all said.

I already said this on the FA board, but I voted for the first option since my option really isn't there.

I was anxious to read OotP as soon as I finished GoF. I am still anxious to read it.

Fanfiction has been a wonderful diversion in the many, arduously-long, toilsome years that we have waited for Book 5--but it doesn't make me want-to/not-want-to read OotP.

That said, at this point, I doubt if OotP will prevent me from wanting to read fanfiction. There are several excellent fanfic writers that I will undoubtedly continue to follow as long as they keep writing. Even if canon makes their fics AU, I will keep reading. More to read, I say!

And I'm not holding my breath thinking that JKR is going to write any slash...

I'm with the two of you. I can't vote in Heidi's poll because fanfiction has NO bearing whatsoever on whether or not I read the rest of the books. I will read them, I am tired of waiting for book 5, and I think that most likely it help people get new fanfic ideas, but fanfic in and of itself has no impact on my reading habits.

Even after the poll has been edited, Heidi, I don't find an option that is quite right for me.

I came upon fanfic after I read the novels. I'd be reading the novel whether or not I was reading fanfic.

The distinction, I think, is that the reading of fanfic only makes the metaphorical pee-pee-dance of waiting more difficult for me.
