Does anyone know of any moderated chat room programs which are either freeware or under 25$?

Hey Heidi *points to above*

I went to the site that someone mentioned in tonight's/last night's chat; chattersonline was a suggestion: http://www.chattersonline.com/

It seems about right - but I didn't investigate further - hope it helps - and thanks to whoever suggested it - I went to look right after chat ended at 11pm EDT but only now got the chance to post :)

Take care and take it easy,
~Sabs

The Java Chat FAQ can be found here at this link http://www.chattersonline.com/ads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=chatroomfaq

You can have Moderating here - am still trying to understand it - but it doesn't archive the transcript:

Can I get transcripts of my room's events?
--No. This java chat does not record any room activity. With the next major upgrade of the software registered rooms will have that capability. Free rooms will not, however.

has the idea of using (or setting up) an IRC server been discussed?

Not sure how that would work - is there a FAQ about such things?

You could find a decent IRC server or network and register a channel, and have everyone download a program like mIRC. There is also a variety of java chat software out there, some that have servers you can set up rooms on for free, and others where you pay for an account.

*points down* looks like [livejournal.com profile] dangel is a little more versed in IRC than i am. i based my suggestion on the farscape chat the other night; that was the first organized one i've been to, and one of the few times i've been IRC in general (though i've done other real-time chats).

i was able to do a search on "IRC FAQ" for several user references. however some of them haven't been updated in a few years, by the look of things. i'll see if i can catch IRL folks over the next few days for suggestions.

i've also successfully used the latest free version of trillian to connect to IRC.

I would use trillian as a substitute for Y!M, AIM, and the (rare) times for ICQ, but I heard it's a bit of a resource hog. ;) Also, can't out of the habit of using mIRC when you've been using it for years. *g*

*g* i've done talkers & bbs's, but never really got into IRC.

as for trillian, i usually don't have too much trouble with it until i leave it connected for 3-5 days. at which point, i just restart the thing. so yes, it does seem to have a memory leak...but at least on Win2K Pro, it takes a while to present itself. (Athlon 650, 128MB RAM.)

It'd probably never survive a decent while on a Windows 98 computer. A future upgrade to XP or 2000 with lots more RAM and hard drive space should warrant a spin on trillian, though.

I peeked at your userinfo, and see that you know [livejournal.com profile] terredancer. Send Tee my greets. *g*

I recommend IRC, as that is what HOL uses. It works well. It says that you have to register, but I have been using it for over a year and haven't done it yet.
