I was researching a post for the C&R list, and in so doing, I found a number of fascinating posts, which I'm going to post fragments from here...

When I first dropped in at FFN late July,
some of the first stories I found were slash. I did not feel they
were appropriate material ... There is nothing
wrong with slash per se ...

I do not usually read it myself, but
the few that I have found have generally been very well written
(Rhysenn's especially)... lastly, Cassie, I'd be
disappointed if slash got into DS or sequels, but it wouldn't stop me
reading. If the author is good enough, slash will detract nothing
from the story. Trust me ... you could get away with it.

I think the fics with an adult party involved (eg, Snape/Draco) are in the minority.
- Rhysenn at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HP_FanFiction/message/615, December, 2000

the HP slash fandom is really flourishing, it's only been around for about half a year and there are over 400 members already.

- Rhysenn, again. Same post as above.

The hpslash egroup (of which I am a
member) has over four hundred and twenty five readers on it. That's a
huge egroup, as big as the HP4grownups one, far bigger than this one,
and that doesn't even count the character-specific slash groups. And
many of those people won't read DS at this point because it *doesn't*
have slash in it.
- Cassie, December, 2000 - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HP_FanFiction/message/579

Therefore I found it semi-disturbing when I didn't
run screaming from slash and hide in the hills with a shotgun ...
there is no question of me getting any enjoyment from slash beyond
reading what can be a damn good fic. Therefore my opinions differ
slightly from the majority ... as long as you give adequate warning,
rate properly, and know that there are multitudes of kids hanging
around @ FFN, then that's fine by me...
- ickle woobie alex, again. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HP_FanFiction/message/617

Aren't they just soooooo cute?

Alex? Cassie's going to get you a drink on me when you get to NY, to make up for this...

Oh my, those are wonderful. Someone should document the history of this fandom; tidbits like that are so amusing. Thanks for sharing!!

Most of it is in the heads of people like Heidi, Flourish and myself. Everynow and again we share bits and pieces, but writing any long winded account is only for when we are all bored.

Heidi only posted the above because she is going to embaress loads of people to mark the anniversary for some yahoo group or other.

LOL. Yes, I recall some AIM chats she posted on the PoU list a while back. Still, they are insightful and amusing to people like moi who just really joined the fandom back in December. It's where it all started, quotes from the Greats!!

There are well over a thousand people on that group!!! It's so funny because I mostly write het-- I write a long AU series with only some slash. This is just hilarious!!!

And they're all concerned about the age-disparate relationships. oh well. :p

like I care....................

~Azalais Malfoy, who personally isn't a huge fan of shota, but would rather people write about than do it... and was certainly not a virgin at 18...

Hey! I'm going through *real* fandom history, and found this. And had to reply to you. Because, yeah, well.

And now it's in my gmail archive, whew.

:D Someday I should tell you how I ended up owning that group, because it's a very funny story. [livejournal.com profile] litalex (whom you have likely never heard of) took it upon herself to get me into slash because I had written a long het AU with slash side stories and she had read my original stuff which was heavily homoerotic (textual yaoi really). She started me out with CLex and H/D. Anyhow, June of 2002, I think it was--I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure, because that was the year Ian McKellen was parade marshal for SF Gay Pride, and we went to that--she decided it was too much for her, and since I was already running a bunch of other active yahoogroups, she turned it over to me.

I ended up leaving it because after becoming close with [livejournal.com profile] nicolae, [livejournal.com profile] shakespearessis and [livejournal.com profile] flourish I felt so weirdly hypocritical dropping people because they weren't 18, especially when there was nothing on that list that could beat some of the mainstream fantasy (Jacqueline Carey anyone) but I knew the membership would never support dropping the age requirement. But I can't even remember when that was, except that it was after Nimbus, probably in 2004 actually.
