The biggest RL thrill of my week: having a new range (oven & stove) installed for my husband's 36 birthday. The range replaces our old, vintage 1966, range - which was, conveniently, as old as Aaron, at least within a few months. It was white, uninsulated, with open burners and a compared-to-modern-appliances small inside. The dial fell off if you turned it quickly and the pilots didn't always light.

What we have now is lovely - still gas and gas, but with sealed burners, a larger inside, and a digital temperature control and most importantly, a timer. Now, I can set it to be on for 50 minutes and cook my dinner while I'm off getting Harry ready for bed, and not worry about it burning. I can put things in it and set it to start cooking 30 minutes later, for 45 minutes, if I want to. And it's insulated, so we won't get burned while cooking on the burners while the oven is on, as we were wont to do.

I am so old.

Nope, you're not old at all. I just went through the 'new stove thrill' myself. We replaced the old electric one with a shiny new gas stove. The old one was a baker's nightmare and drove Andy to distraction every time he had an order for a cake. It was a guess as to what temperature it would decide to heat the oven to, necessitating the constant presence of a thermometer in the oven and much adjusting to get it to the right place.

Andy is so thrilled with the new stove he's now talking about replacing the decrepit old electric clothes dryer with a shiny new gas one. Is appliance buying contagious?

Ha!

OLD? I think not. Come and talk to me when you're 99.

:)
