that Doug, the husband of Jen, a former colleague of mine, was at Cantor Fitzgerald.

Doug was also a college classmate of my husband's, and Jen went to law school with aaron as well. I haven't seen them in 3 years, not since their 10 year college reunion, although I did talk with Jen a little over a year ago. She has two children under 5, is gorgeous and smart and could be a little mean on occasion but that is completely irrelevant now.

I'm going to send her a note. I can't even begin to explain how sorry I am for her.

I know too many people who knew people - I mean, I did know people who were killed as well, but I "knew" them in the sense that I'd had one or two conversations with them.

I wish I'd known them better. I wish I had a chance to know them now. Yael's cousin, for example. Or my best friend's husband's cousin. Or the relative of ebony's student. Or Alicia/Sue's teacher's spouse.

I am still going to NYC next month, husband and son in tow. We are not missing one of my oldest friend's weddings because of this.

Donald Rumsfeld said, in an article on Slate what is probably one of the first things I agree with him completely about. "We have a choice: either to change the way we live, which is unacceptable; or to change the way that they live. And we chose the latter."

My university has set up a board for people to check in, to say they are safe, and to let us know who is not. I've been checking every day, reconnecting with people, making plans to do things. I am hunting for a website on which I can donate to the JP Morgan/Chase foundation for those who worked in Windows on the World. I loved that restaurant, and the people who worked there were all killed. And I know the families of the heroes who rescued people need help - lots of it, financial and otherwise - but the families of the busboys and waiters and sous chefs need it too. If you know where I can donate to them - please let me know.
