bluapapilio: Characters from Men of the Harem webtoon (MotH guard and consort)
[personal profile] bluapapilio

Chapter 9: Raean: "Did you really have to kill Thula?" what, would locking him up in a cell for the rest of his life really be much more 'nice'? And he would've just escaped using a traitor.

Raean: "He was family even though he killed your father and usurped the throne! Blood is important!"

*scoff* Seriously? If you'd just said that you hated she had to stain her hands with his blood I would've found it more relatable. And he says being merciful especially at the beginning is important, but the guy did all that terrible stuff, she would've been seen as weak if she didn't make a showing of it! Raean is too naive.

Wait, they have 'other siblings'? *confused*

Chapter 10: I thought Ranamun was always going to be the consort? Or was that just rumored?

Okay apparently there's a regular consort and a royal consort?? I see, he can go on to become a royal consort from his position as consort, which he plans to do within the year because he's pissed at her announcement to take on multiple consorts.

Honestly he has the ambition to keep up with Latil. It's too bad he won't get to use the skills he learned to be good in bed. *smh*

Latil's letter to Hyacinth telling him to pick a consort for her is 👌.

Klein's misunderstanding really bothers me but he's so dramatic it's hilarious to watch.

Continued liveblog as I read Seven Seas’ new print edition of PSOH, and sometimes make comparisons to the original Tokyopop translation.

I’m posting the individual reactions on Mastodon and Bluesky, then rounding them up in the blog. Previous roundups in my PSOH fandom tag. You can pick up the books with my affiliate links here.

When rounding up this post, I expected it to be shorter than the last one…then I actually checked the word count, and it’s almost exactly the same. Commented about fewer panels, but I carried on for longer, so it balanced out.

I had a lot to do today: a kinda tricky day at work, walking Teddy, making dinner, visiting a friend, and I wanted to go to the gym.

And I did all of it! And some chores like moving heavy things around, finalizing the grocery delivery that'll come tomorrow, and doing laundry.

Feels good.

Free art!

Recently I've been on a free art kick, browsing images of paintings, sketches, sculptures, photos, needlework and so many other types of artworks that various institutions have digitalized. Here are two such fantastic resources.

The Met Collection
Travel around the world and across 5,000 years of history through 490,000+ works of art.

This is where I found this absolutely fantastic 19th century sketchbook. The artist is unidentified - the only information available is that they must have been Japanese (even though the sketchbook was marked "Chinese Drawings"). I loved their art so much I have turned two of their pieces into embroideries! (But that's a different post.)

And then I learned about the Integrated Collections Database of the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, Japan, (ColBase) where you can find treasures like THIS!!

See it here on ColBase.

ColBase is a database containing the collections of the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, Japan. It encompasses the four National Museums in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Kyushu, the two National Research Institutes for Cultural Properties in Tokyo and Nara, and the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan.

About ColBase & (very generous!) Terms of Use.

I have spent so much time doing random browsing, and I've found so much lovely art - and several amazing pieces I kind of want to call "ye olde shitposting" for lack of a better term for something that is clearly a little weird and maybe meant to provoke a reaction in the viewer?

Or what else would you call He's Made Up of Many People, which. Yes. That is indeed what's going on here.

But that kind of stuff is in the minority! It's all art that is out of copyright, but some of it still feels very modern, like this painting of Mount Hiei from the 1920s.

Anyway, I can definitely recommend art scrolling as an option to doom scrolling!

The lives of female prisoners in the 19th Century and those experiencing the criminal justice system today are not dissimilar, a charity worker has said.
An exhibition at Newcastle Cathedral is documenting the untold stories from female prisoners at the former Newcastle Prison, which stood in the city's Carliol Square between 1828-1925.

Volunteers from a family history group have begun transcribing the records of at least 6,000 women, imprisoned by Cambridge University in the 19th Century. I have read the book by Biggs (The Spinning House) but was underwhelmed as a result of her stylistic narrative choices. I am all for this sort of project.

Hmmmm. While I would certainly agree that female desire is not taken seriously enough: A very paternalistic attitude’: why is female desire still not taken seriously?, I am massively, massively, massively cynical about the potential of the 'pink pill' or female viagra as I had several posts here some years back about the very unprepossessing results produced*. In particular I adduce this link to the ever sensible Dr Petra Boynton's thoughts. Is this just being bigged up by pharma entrepreneurs???

People frequently ask us about whether their specific US state is trying to enact a social media age verification law so they can call their state representatives and yell at them about it! I have had "build a system that will let me easily update this without having to do so manually, categorizing these bills by status, what problems they have, and what we'd do about them if they pass" on my want-to-do list for a really long time, but until I can, here's the current list of bills I know about.

This (very long, sigh) list is accurate to the best of my knowledge as of 8 March 2026, but it may not include every bill that's been introduced in every state. (I've used a few different lists plus my own "searching until I got too depressed to continue" to assemble it, excluding laws I think have absolutely no chance of passing but including laws where I think there's still even a slight chance.) If you know of one that isn't on the list, please let me know in the comments!

These are state laws only. I'm concentrating on those because you can find lists of bad federal bills more easily, but all the lists of state bills I know of are industry-gated or limited-distribution. If you don't have a preferred source for finding out about bad federal legislation about the internet, Bad Internet Bills (from Fight for the Future) and the EFF Action Center are a great place to start!

This list is only counting social media bills; I am not including bills that don't apply to us because they're modeled on the app store/OS age signal model legislation or bills that deal with age verification for other services like chatbots or "AI companions", because I'd go completely off the rails and resort to just screaming incoherently when the list passed a hundred items. I will try to update this at least quarterly, or whenever the Magic 8 Ball says there's a rapidly moving bill that you need to yell at people about.

For various reasons not limited to the overhead activity of children in the mornings, last night was the first real time all week that I slept and have thus spent most of the day in a vague state of hibernation despite the warmth of the air. There was a mauve overcast around sunset that turned out to belong to a volcanic wall of gold and bougainvillea over an agate-blue cloud-band. Have some mostly musical links.

For the more than twenty years since [personal profile] lesser_celery made me a CD of Peter Gabriel's Melt (1980), I have assumed that the eerily voiced French refrain of "Games Without Frontiers" was either the singer's own falsetto or pitch-shifted vocals. It turns out to be Kate Bush. I would never have identified her on my own, but then I thought about "Army Dreamers" (1980).

I grew up on Arlo Guthrie, but my favorite version of "City of New Orleans" (1971) is almost certainly Steve Goodman himself in 1970, where he reminded me unexpectedly of a Chicago-accented Stan Rogers. It's driving me nuts that I would swear the first person I heard lead "The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over" (1977) was Pete Seeger and I can't figure out where.

WERS has been playing nothing but female artists for International Women's Day, which means everything from Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" (1978), Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine" (1983), and Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl" (1993) to Tegan and Sara's "I'll Be Back Someday" (2019), Orla Gartland's "Little Chaos" (2024), and Arlo Parks' "2SIDED" (2026). I had a moral obligation to let my father know when Rickie Lee Jones came around.

Video quality regardless, [personal profile] sholio's "Waking Up in Vegas" (The Greatest American Hero) remains one of my all-time favorites of their vids.

Reading. I confess I have tripped and fallen into a special interest and am therefore currently primarily working my way through the archives of She's A Beast. BUT.

  • This was all kicked off by A Physical Education: How I Escaped Diet Culture and Gained the Power of Lifting, Casey Johnston, inhaled; more comprehensive notes on this topic currently part way through being typed up.
  • I am also about half way through (reading!) LIFTOFF: Couch to Barbell, also Casey Johnston, and am having fun starting to play with moving my body in ways.
  • Continuing the theme of Moving Bodies In Ways and What Even Are Muscles, I have also started Science of Pilates (Tracy Ward).
  • I also continue to work my way through What Is Queer Food?, John Birdsall, and am nearly done. Probably more thoughts on this at some point in the upcoming week.

Writing. Words continue to, very slowly, go up.

Listening. More Hidden Almanac. Very close to being caught up to the point I've theoretically listened to with A (some of which I wound up being asleep during)...

Playing. Inkulinati Exploders run on Master difficulty continues. We have now broken a quill (DEMONS :|) but we do continue to progress...

Another round (well, most of one) of The Little Orchard, this time with The Child deciding that we SHOULD turn the Bothersome Crows back over and put them back...

Cooking. New recipe! Meera Sodha's leek & chard martabak. Unlikely to make again but not sorry to have made.

Exploring. Adventures this week have included:

  • Wood Green Mall, which contains PRIDE STAIRS, and the Community Diagnostic Centre, which contains GIANT WATERFOWL MURAL
  • the walk between Wood Green underground station and Wood Green Mall, feat. ACORN BOLLARDS
  • went for a bit of a Cross Walk one evening earlier this week (brain said AAAAAAH) and discovered along the way a fantastic white-with-pink-stripes camellia
  • generally Going Out To Run Errands is currently accompanied by Many Flowers and that is nice, actually

Hard to believe I hadn't been up there in a month! If it wasn't Spring yet then, it is now. Well before dawn I was on the first rise, waiting for the sun and listening to the dawn chorus, not just migrants such as Orange-crowned Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets (they don't breed here but they sure do sing), but locals, especially Purple Finches. It was wonderful. There was an Allen's Hummingbird displaying and Spotted Towhees, Oak Titmice and Lesser Goldfinches singing, and the California Thrasher was working up to singing at the north end of the trail. I also had some less usual species on my list. A flock of Cedar Waxwings made a few passes; a Double-crested Cormorant flew west, presumably to fish; there were a few American White Pelicans on the reservoir; and a single Snow Goose flew over! The list: )

The White-crowned Sparrow singing near the parking lot as I returned was quite a surprise. I don't see many up there and hear ever fewer. Must be migration!

This will be short because I need to go to bed, but I wanted to say -- particularly for our mutual friends here -- that D had his operation today; it all went just as planned (in his family group chat, his mum his back-on-the-ward selfie looked a bit woozy, and yes, but also he looked just like that before the op because he had to be there at 7 this morning!) and smoothly. He's home, tired and sore but able to watch TV, play video games, eat dinner, watch baseball with me. It's been a nice evening.

Boring )

I didn't get as much done today as I might have hoped, but I did a good job of prioritizing what needed to happen today vs. what can wait until tomorrow. Really hoping I get better sleep tonight; it's been kinda shitty for a couple weeks and that takes its toll on everything else; I've had a low-grade headache most of the day and I think it's largely the broken sleep and weird dreams.

Summary:
Tendou Satoru, a cameraman for the school newspaper, has confessed his love to track star and childhood friend Sawaguchi Shirou every spring since entering high school. Each year Shirou has rejected him claiming that his confession is a sick joke. As the spring of their third year approaches, Satoru is starting to wonder if he should give up on his unrequited love or risk being rejected a third time. Will Satoru be able to convince Shirou that his love is genuine? Or will Hiro Seiichi, the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, steal Satoru away before he and Shirou can reconcile their differences?

My comments: I remembered this pretty well and I still really enjoyed it despite it having a love triangle (unrequited on one side) and a misunderstanding. It's a nicely contained and wrapped up story.

Grammar issues: I know people get it wrong IRL too but 'I could care less' was used. 'Felling' instead of 'feeling'.

I am enjoying this Clarkesworld subscription. Snail mail once a month full of stories! And my favorite part of the subscription has been the recurring Morag and Seamus stories by Fiona Moore (all free online). I believe it's every one of her Clarkesworld stories from "The Spoil Heap" on. The list on the site is reverse chronological, so if you want to read in order, scroll down to "The Spoil Heap" and read up from there.

While very different, they remind me in vibe of Naomi Kritzer's "The Year Without Sunshine". One of my difficulties with some hopepunk is that it can ignore hard truths—which, I admit, is sometimes what I want! But like "The Year Without Sunshine", the Morag and Seamus stories don't pretend mutual aid can create Abundance™️, or outcompete bad and selfish actors, or defeat natural disasters, or solve medical and ability needs, or create entire post-scarcity planets or large societies where goodness reigns. In fact, the Morag and Seamus stories specifically roll their eyes at people who think we can achieve fully automated luxury gay space communism.

They're just about people (and possibly robots) figuring their shit out, in myriad ways. Some are helpers and some aren't; some make family in all kind of ways; nobody's sure what the future holds. Last week was once again mostly swallowed by work and I'm very tired, plus I have to final-read a rewrite this afternoon.

Between Friday night and yesterday, I managed to read a couple manga volumes and [personal profile] scruloose and I saw the new ep. of The Pitt.

That's all I've got right now.

All right, here I'm going to have to concede that my usual strategy for disambiguating game titles has broken down. This post is about a game called 2025 that came out in the year 2025.

grid of items including aluminium, Star-Lord, booby, and Charles Fairbanks

It's a puzzle where you're presented with two thousand and twenty-five items that you have to group into 45 categories of 45 items each. This is a much bigger version of the New York Times daily 4x4 categorization puzzle Connections (which you can play on a third party site if you don't want to deal with the NYT), which in turn is inspired by the British quiz show Only Connect.

2025 is not as conceptually difficult as Connections, which goes out of its way to trick you into thinking items go together that don't. I figured out what the 45 categories in 2025 were relatively quickly, and then spent a long time with most of them almost full (40+) and staring at a couple hundred uncategorized items that I had simply never heard of. I was able to guess some of them by what sort of a thing they sounded like they could plausibly be, but I also used a lot of brute force, especially towards the end. Yes, the first category I successfully filled was
spoilersbirds. The last one I filled was legal doctrines, which are very hard to tell apart from mixed drinks and logical fallacies because all three are mostly ridiculous-sounding nonsense phrases.

You can play 2025 for free on the website of its creator, Thomas Colthurst. His whole site is worth looking at if you are fondly nostalgic for '90s era web sites made by geeks of a certain generation who want to share their filk about linear algebra and lists of puns they and their friends came up with on Usenet.

Thanks to [personal profile] lirazel for the recommendation!
