Quickly updating now I am back at home

In the last ten days I have: Had a child graduate from elementary school and win the first Outstanding AR Reader award for hitting 945 AR points (he would've hit a thousand by the close of the school year but the librarian took ill *at* the graduation although she is doing fine now, so they didn't open the library on those last two days); taken said child and friend to camp; been home for 36 hours; started the younger kids at camp; gone to Orlando; got terrible blisters because of a bad shoe choice; listened to John Williams conduct music from Harry Potter, met JK Rowling in the shop inside Hogwarts Castle as I was putting my stuff in a locker to go on The Forbidden Journey ride for the first time; participated in round tables with cast & park-and-film art & producer people; flown on a Hippogryff and on a broomstick; pondered kareoke songs to sing during Infinitus; got a terrible bugbite on my back (I blame Aragog); eaten two Cauldron Cakes; drank far too many Butterbeers; hung out with friends at The Three Broomsticks; tweeted a lot and counted the days to Infinitus.

26, btw. 22 until I get on-site.

Registration closes in three days, so if you are coming and haven't registered yet and have any interest in going to the feasts, you need to now. And Night of a Thousand Wizards sold out a few days ago, but there is a waitlist if you're registered.

Things I know I am doing at Infinitus:
Presenting twice on Thursday
Selling "Keep Calm & Carry Wands" gear at the Craft Faire to support FA's upcoming server purchase (more on this next month) on Thursday evening
Going to the amazing luncheon on Friday featuring [livejournal.com profile] naominovik, [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales, [livejournal.com profile] aliwilgus, [livejournal.com profile] karenhealey and [livejournal.com profile] rj_anderson, moderated by [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr.
Going to Night of a Thousand Wizards
Drinking frozen Butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks with friends on Wednesday night
Going to a dozen amazing panels on Friday & Saturday
Helping at Registration on Tuesday and Wednesday

Things I am doing before Infinitus:
*Choosing what dress to wear for NoaTW (more info on clothing coming on Tuesday)
*Trying to get many of you to volunteer to be programming prefects and/or security volunteers. Programming prefecting is easy - you just sit in your assigned programming sessions (and you can choose the ones you want if nobody's claimed them yet) and keep time and make sure the question process is organized. Volunteer sign-up info is here and programming prefects have almost nothing to do before the event starts. If you haven't seen the formal programming times yet, they're all up here
*Finding better shoes to wear around the parks because those sandals cut me.
*Catching up on LJ. If you posted something this past week that you think I should read (fic, meta, news, etc., please link me to it!)
*Getting a chair massage tomorrow. SO much driving this week, so I desperately need it.

There is one thing I wanted to post about re the Forbidden Journey ride. As Reuters reported yesterday and others have reported in the last few weeks, there is an issue for people of larger size in being able to ride the Forbidden Journey:
Jeff Guillaume of Lansing, Michigan, who in 2002 founded an early online Harry Potter news aggregator and fan site HPANA.com, said fans like him will be disappointed because of limitations on body size to ride the Forbidden Journey.

At 5 feet, 8 inches and 265 pounds (1.72 meters and 119 kg), Guillaume said his mid-section would not allow the restraint system to close, so he could not board the most heavily promoted ride. He said some other rides include special cars for larger guests.

But [Thierry] Coup said that Orlando Magic basketball player Dwight Howard fit into the restraint and rode the ride this week. Howard is listed on the NBA's website as 6 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 265 pounds (2.11 meters and 119 kg).

I can't tell what the maximum weight-height ratio is. I know people who are 5 foot 5 and 200 pounds who got on, as well as someone who is 5 foot 7 and 230, but I think we'll hear more on this. But if your BMI is over 37 or 38, you may have an issue getting onto the ride. There are seats out front to test, and if you can't ride you should still walk through the castle queue - it's definitely worth an hour to get to see it all! And hopefully they will figure out a way to tweak the seating system to allow people of larger size to ride.

Yay on the AR points! What a great job! Damien hated AR and actually started reading more once he got away from that program. Go figure. He must have really hated keeping that reading log! Here's hoping he doesn't have to work in a cube someday and turn in TPS reports.

If you had one finish elementary school, I had one (the one and only, I should say) finish middle school and I'm slightly traumatized by the fact that I live with a high schooler. How did this happen?

I'm glad that you posted the info about the Forbidden Journey ride. I haven't fit on those kinds of rides in years, even when I weighed a lot less than I do now, but I was curious if I'd be able to go through the line with Damien since I don't want to leave him wandering alone for that long. I'm glad to know I'll be able to.

How scary is the Forbidden Journey ride? I'm not much for rollercoasters, and am trying to figure out how much of a thrill ride it is and whether or not I'm going to want to go on it.

Also - you met JKR? *envies* I hope you took pictures!

And I'm wishing now that we'd bought tickets to [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr's (et al) luncheon. Oh well. What would we have done with the girls anyway?

[identity profile] heidi8.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The ride is thrilling but unless you have spider or bassilisk phobias that are severe you should go at least once. And peg's lunch isn't sold out yet. You should come, and Will could take the girls to lunch by the pool (perhaps with aaron & my kids?)

[identity profile] aome.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
How thrilling? Plunge in darkness thrilling? Like the Dinosaur! ride at Animal Kingdom? I'm just ... eep. And I already know Two is too short to go on it - she'll be terribly disappointed, but I'm the weenie one who is wibbling.

Edit: Also, I don't see Peg's name on the Friday Keynote Luncheon panel listing. Is there another luncheon that I'm missing? I'm ... sigh ... not sure about $75 for a lunch. Will have to think on that one. But it does sound awesome.

It's on the newsletter but yeah I think it disappeared from the website when we moved servers. I'll ask Mary to put it back in.

If there were any moments of total darkness, I don't remember them. There is a bit where you are turned onto your back and a few where you tip forward a very small bit but the restraints are very padded and over your shoulders, so you feel very secured, I thought.

I actually have that menu, although it's not on the website yet - tomato bisque, citrus salad stations, rosemary-lemon chicken, striped bass, vegan portobello bolognese, asparagus and assorted other veggies. I know you have restrictions, so they can probably do something with the chicken or the bass that works within your guidelines.

participated in round tables with cast & park-and-film art & producer people

OH So COOL!! How'd you manage that?!

Yay for meeting JKR!

And, a dress for NoTW??? Is this another fancy-pants thing like the Ball? I guess I have to wait till tuesday to read...

*loves another excuse to go shopping*

Yeah, major suckage at skinny rides. I'm probably not gonna be able to go either cause I've put on a few pounds the past few months. Hmmphhh! Bad Universal!

Also, I sent you an email/DM tweet about someone possibly using your airline ticket from JFK, but I'm not sure if she got her own now. I'll try to find out soon.

Omg, I can't wait for this!

My real question about the size issues on the ride is - are the restraints across the top of the torso? Because then it also becomes a problem for the more generously endowed in the chest area. D:

[identity profile] heidi8.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was fine as was a friend who is at least a 40-DD - possibly larger. It's more a problem for those with larger stomachs, I think - barrel-chested guys.

Well that's dumb - there are a lot of barrel-chested people in the world!

[identity profile] etakyma.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...so Spiderman was almost too much for me, and I hated Jimmy Neutron. How intense is Forbidden Journey ride-wise?

OMG you met JKR!!!!

Just saw the schedule and times - will make sure A knows that I'll be unavailable for an hour, since apparently she'll mostly need me on Thursday. We should probably talk a bit more about our presentation at some point... lol

Hmm... I hope I don't have a problem with the ride. Hopefully since I'm tall, things will, ah, spread out okay. Hahaha.

I am planning on screwing my entire diet and having cauldron cakes and butter beer.

I'm beyond excited. A little worried because I've been out of the fandom for a bit, but I'm working on artwork and I'm slowly getting into it again.

By the way, is it possible for a non-registered person to participate as a volunteer? One of my friends cannot afford the full registration, so she only has a one-day registration, but she would be interested in volunteering on the days when she doesn't have registration. She also volunteered last year, but then she was fully-registered.

[identity profile] heidi8.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
She can volunteer on Thursday as that day will be opened to everyone with a Friday or Saturday (or two-day) reg. Not sure about Friday, though - maybe in the Common Room but not as a programming prefect?

I wish I could go to Infinitus!! I would be a security gal in a heartbeat.

Also, loved all your tweets from the park!

Oh man, your tweets about Jo Rowling made my night. And John Williams! It all sounds fantastic. I really really really wish I could go to Infinitus.
