Avengers theories

Don't read unless you've seen Avengers, or are willing to read spoilers for two major plot points, including one that comes in the last five minutes of the film. If you'd rather read my not-very-spoilery review at Hypable, it's here.

Theory #1, re Son of Coul
So, Son of Coul is stabbed by Loki, then after Loki escapes Fury comes to him and Phil says a few last words and then looks to expire and the medic team shows up but we see nothing more of Phil or the medics.
So with all SHEILD's tech and abilities, they can't staunch a stab wound, or enable someone to recover from it? I've seen a few theorize that the Coulson who confronted Loki was a decoy, and I don't want to believe that because I think Coulson's bravery and actions in that scene are 100% him, in the moment, but I do also want to believe that SHIELD tech was able to patch him back up and revive him.
And Fury lied! Why go through so much trouble to show us that Fury lied about the cards to manipulate Steve and Tony, if it's not going to have some degree of future payoff?

Theory #2, re Loki
Loki's hold over Clint is broken by a head injury that knocks him out.
Loki's hold over Selvig is broken by a head injury that knocks him out.
Loki suffers a head injury when Hulk flops him around like a rag doll in Stark Tower that seems to knock him out, and once he's awake again, he doesn't do anything to escape, or taunt anyone or try anything to injure anyone - and it looks to be at least the next day before he goes back to Asgard.
Is it possibly, theoretically possible that while Loki did seek out the Teseract, he was in thrall to it, under its spell, or otherwise not completely operating of his own free will, until he had that head injury that knocked him out?
It's not a complete erase button for the worst things he did in this film, but it would provide a fulcrum to jump off from if they do want a redemption arc in Thor 2, as Hiddleston has cryptically hinted at. Not quite Journey to Mystery-style, but a step in that direction.

And am I the only one who thinks Loki conjured up some Asgardian Popcorn while watching Thor, Iron Man and Captain America have their little fight in the forest? I was so glad that they realized that he wanted to be on the helicarrier - for whatever reason - immediately - because why else would he have stayed on that cliff, watching them?

Also, where was Thor hiding those magic-binding chains and that gag the whole time? In his pants? In one of those wormhole-boltholes like Loki used for the Cask in Thor?

Hey there, followed you from LJ. :D

I really like your theories, and I had the same suspicions about Loki as well. I even said aloud in the theater after seeing him 'waking up', "Was he brainwashed?" It's a possible theory, and it's incredibly curious just how he got into the whole situation to begin with. The whole conversation he had with 'The Other' was also quite interesting, especially the threat "you think you know pain?"

FOUND YOUR REVIEW VIA...SOMEWHERE. THERE WAS A LINK.

Coulson - It would not surprise me in the least if Coulson reappears and it was all something Fury concocted. It's a comic movie, and everyone knows no one dies for realz in comics. XD

Loki - The first shot of Loki's eyes, with the horrible dark rings (which Clint and Selvig also later acquire) definitely made me curious about what the hell Loki had gone through. And he looked really shaken when he went on that little dream walk or whatever and spoke to the Other. Seriously, he looked WRECKED through most of the movie. And his constant mantra of 'it's too late' means that I will totally not be surprised when the plethora of fic appears about Loki being brainwashed or blackmailed or threatened or whatever. I think it's pretty undeniable that he was seriously unhinged at points, so at the very least there's the insanity plea. XD

To me it felt like whenever Thor got close enough to try and talk sense into Loki, at times there was almost this moment of clarity with him, and then he'd be 'it's too late', and shut back down and...stab Thor.

I was very impressed with Tom Hiddleston's portrayal. I think he was wonderfully nuanced.

OH YES. The 2th theory could be somethingk to think about...I also noticed the weird yellow halo around their eyes, and that also Loki had the same. It appeared to get worse when he's close to the tesseract or uses its power. when he fights with Thor there were 2 times in which you can see he has clearer eyes and focus, and the infamously pretty teary gaze. It could totally be!!

Anyway, I think they would be idiots to throw asides Loki after such a success, it's undeniable that he's what made this movie work for a good 60%. I mean, the villains are very important. If they are not 'likable' then the heroes also lose appeal.

So, I heard one time that avengers 2 was to star Tom Hiddleston again, but then I heard it's not true...somebody know something?

I SO need to see it again, but I did notice that there's one moment of absolute clarity where Loki realizes that he's lost control of the situation, when he's fighting with Thor up on Tony's balcony, right before he stabs thor. That's the realization that things have gone terribly horribly wrong and now he's trying to run (ie, stabbing his brother, which is NOT a controlled reaction, at ALL.)

I think he may have sought out the Other for help in revenge, but that it went way too far. I mean, what's the fun in ruling if there's no one to rule? There's definitely a lot more going on, and it's not all within Loki's control.

(speaking of Loki, as usual, the scene with Tony! awesome in the promo materials, even BETTER in the movie. Especially where he totally fails to influence tony and is just stuck going ... BWUH????? Until he throws tony out the building, at least.)

No, I was thinking that when watching that scene as well. List telepathy? :)
