What is the difference between Katherine Neville's The Eight series and RPF 18th & 19th century politics?

Anyhow, I ended up submitting these:
Tomorrow People (1973)
Katherine Neville's The Eight
Indiana Jones movies
Hiding Out (movie)
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (movie)
RPF 18th & 19th century politics (and I am shocked, SHOCKED that Germaine de Staƫl and the Empress Josephine were not already included in the "character" list)

It's looking likely that I'll be going to Epcot for some Food & Wine Festival funtimes in the afternoon/early evening on October 21 - anyone want to join me for a nosh-around?

First, so many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cedara for The Painting (White Collar) and [livejournal.com profile] dreamofstars for The Queen's Gambit Accepted (Chess, Svetlana-centric).

As for me, I wrote "Pink & Glitter", a story based on Lev Grossman's The Magicians, which came out last August. I knew it wouldn't find many readers because it's not just an obscure fandom, the novel itself is barely five months old. But I am generally happy with how the story turned out - it's about Julia, and the summary is thus:

To learn magic outside the Brakebills system, Julia had to do terrible things.

You can read it here - if you've read The Magicians, I'm really curious to hear what you think.

Also, last night I posted a gift-vid for [livejournal.com profile] gypsy_sunday in [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas - It's a Dean-centric vid with a heavy undercurrent of Sam/Dean subtext, set to Snow Patrol's Headlights on Dark Roads (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] momebie for the song suggestion!). Full postings of everything to [livejournal.com profile] pear_vodka coming soonish.

Am home from a wonderful three day adventure in Orlando with family and friends, where we saw the Osbourne Family lights at Hollywood Studios, rode Everest, allowed my four year old to go on the Jurassic Park ride (which she loved!) and enjoyed a Pom margarita at, obviously, Margaritaville.

Also, I got to see a bunch of spaces at CityWalk which are perfect for group/website/podcast/ship/interest group/meet-up events during Infinitus, and gaze upon Hogwarts without the scaffolding and it looks amazingly gorgeous (and the wizarding world *can* make palm trees grow in Scotland, right?).

Then, I came home, and unpacked, and woke to Yuletide treasures!

Two lovely fics for me! So gorgeously glorious to read!

And the bizarre thing was that I dreamed that I was reading a Yuletide fic and it wasn't anything I had requested, and I can't actually remember it anyway, but then I woke up and saw OMG TWO fics and wanted to read them both at the same time but I couldn't so I went in alphabetical order by fandom:

The Queen's Gambit Accepted: (Chess - Rice/Ulvaeus/Andersson) Fifteen years after Bangkok, Anatoly Sergievsky seeks advice from the one person who knows him well - his ex-wive, Svetlana.
Svetlana is unmistakably brilliant and kick-arse, Anatoly is having issues, and the dialogue and setup are spot-on perfection. A fantastic coda to the musical!

The Painting: (White Collar) Peter Burke and Neal Caffrey are going to one of Elizabeth's events.
Mmmmm, Peter and Neal shopping for tuxes. Peter and Neal at a museum gala. Elizabeth being adorable and smart. And it looks like it might actually be a 'verse? With more to come on the story? While I think it's a terrific, true-to-canon tale to begin with, if there does turn out to be more chapters here, it would make my 2010! (And Yuletide Writer of Wonderfulness, I will point out that my birthday is in three weeks.)

In less cheery news, the screen on my laptop got damaged over the weekend and I have a few hundred missing pixels on the top right of my screen, which is probably the best physical place to have issues. But, still. Taking it to the SONY store on Monday to see if there is anything they can do.

I'm stuck in Orlando without a computer plug, and I won't be back until either very late on the 24th or early on the 25th. I have my handheld with me, though, which is great for reading things I've been directly linked to, although it's not very useful for using the AO3 search engine :(

I would love to read my fic, though, and I allow commenting, so if you can give me a direct link to your fic, or if any of my flisties can do so, I would be very, very grateful.

Thanks in advance, and happy Yuletide!

I have one invitation to AO3, so first come, first served, whoever wants it. It's most of use right now if you want to write Yuletide treats so I'd rather give it to someone who wants to do so, but doesn't have an account there yet.

LMK. Comments are screened, but this post is not flocked so feel free to send a friend over.

So so sorry about the delay! I've been traveling this week, and then there was an illness in my husband's family, and I just haven't had the chance to sit down and write this up. I hope my initial request gave you some good ideas, and if it did, please do not let anything I say in this post squash any of them.

I love gen, slash, het, femmeslash - anything is fine! But you absolutely don't need to write anything NC17 or even R if you don't want to. Let me just say that if you can cross over Chess and The Eight, I will swoon forever. But don't feel like you have to! I don't celebrate Christmas as I'm Jewish, so I'd rather nothing focused on the religious-holiday aspects of Christmas. I also don't enjoy apocalypse-fics, main character deaths or pain for pain's sake - happy endings are glorious if that's where the story is meant to go.

Fandom: Chess (musical)

I'd love either a Svetlana post-show fic where she leaves Anatoly and is wonderful and terrific on her own, or a post-show, post-cold-war story where Florence, Freddie and Anatoly deal with all their Issues by snogging and shagging. Or both in one fic (but I feel like that's asking for too much).

Also, given that there are at least ninety three (or so) different versions of the Chess storyline, take whichever one you want and run with it - or mash up a few. No Contest, Talking Chess, Someone Else's Story, Difficult and Dangerous Times - they can all exist together, and it can be 1974 or 1978 or 1983. It's all good!

Fandom: Leverage (tv)

I picked "any" characters as there's five in the family, plus I adore Sterling and Maggie, so anything with a caper would be fantastic. (Crossovers with Chuck or White Collar are fantastic, if possible.)

I think my favorite episodes so far were Two Live Crew, both David episodes, and Lost Heir, because I lovelovelove Hardison as a lawyer - although I'd be thrilled to see any of the team as a lawyer. Or using LJ or Twitter in a job. Banter, character interaction, UST - any or all would be fantastic. Just please, no plane crashes or fics where the FBI agents are the main characters.

Fandom: Katherine Neville - The Eight series

Character request: Catherine/Nim

I'll say it - I do not love Solarin/Catherine. When Ms Neville wrote that the one thing Mireille had left out of the equation was love, I rolled my eyes, because I already adored Cat with Nim. But I accepted it, sort of the same way I accept Jo/Bhaer in Little Women. If you're willing to pair Catherine and Nim, either in a gen way (pre-book or post-book) or shippily, that would be fantastic.

Now, if you truly loved The Fire, then this can be set after that, but if you haven't read it or are okay with doing an AU where Cat and Solarin aren't married, I'd love some adventurey Cat/Nim or Cat-and-Nim with puzzles (or at least references to them) and if possible some historical characters thrown in for good measure.

I have a tag for The Eight which includes some of my random posts through the years about the series and characters.

Fandom: White Collar (tv)

Anything with Neal and Peter would be joy - but if Neal is really the identical twin or clone of Bryce Larkin (Chuck) it would be joy-squared. Otherwise, something involving Broadway and/or one of Elizabeth's events would be great. Neal/Peter or Neal/Peter/Elizabeth are equally terrific and shiny and sparky and so are stories that are gen, Neal/[anyone from Leverage] or Neal/Chuck Bartowski.

Does any of this help? Hope so! If you have any questions, though, feel free to ask me anything via the Mods, and thank you so much, in advance, for everything you do!

Happy hols!

Dear Yuletide Writer:
This is not my letter. I am traveling tomorrow and have a lot of last minute family stuff before I go, so I expect to be able to post my letter tomorrow. For now, I just really hope you like one of the things I included in my requests, and if not, hopefully what I post tomorrow will be more inspirational.

Thanks and hugs and friendliness in advance....

And I've just put in my noms - has anyone else nominated:

The Princess & the Frog (new Disney movie)
Lev Grossman - The Magicians

I also selected a few from the pull-down:
Katherine Neville - The Eight
Dr Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog
Glee

I tried to nominate Leverage but it wasn't eligible. It got one story last year, and that was in the New Year's Resolutions stage, and didn't even debut until December of last year, well after assignments were handed out, IIRC. Am off to find out why it isn't eligible, because I thought everything was in its first year. I mean, Torchwood was! And AI S8 is this year, and there's a lot more Kradam than there is Leverage fic.... Hopefully there will be good news on that front. If not, Leverage RPS, I hope?

For my first time participating, this turned out to be a fascinating, phenomenal experience. I wrote Heroes RPF for the first time, as a gift for [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal, who requested Adrian Pasdar/Jack Coleman, and said, "You will be my friend forever if you can put together the hotness of Pasdar and Coleman. Mention of sig others and angst are no problem. (By all means throw Natalie in there.) I'm not a big Adrian/Milo shipper, but if it's part of your fanon, I can live with it as long as I get the Jack/Adrian smut."

I've never written smut, but I got somewhat close with Loose Tongue (title from a Neil Finn song), wherein Milo is jumping on the bandwagon and making a few anti-Prop-8 short films, and one's going to feature Adrian and Jack. It's rated R and you can read it here.

So many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] roguebitch, [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace and [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose for beta and [livejournal.com profile] mijan and [livejournal.com profile] jlh for sensationally inspirational cheerleading.

Definitely participating again next year.

One of the nifty things about this year is that it brought me back in touch with [livejournal.com profile] tptigger, who I first met probably ten-plus years ago on the Tomorrow People mailing list - she wrote the adorable Panic In the Disco tomorrow people fic for me. And thanks, as well, to [livejournal.com profile] vampedvixen for the wonderful Adrian/Milo fic, The Subtext Is Rapidly Becoming Text. It was adorable and spot-on.

Santa in Florida )

Woke up with Child, who is now back to sleep, and hopped online to see if Yuletide was up yet. Alas, no - will check again in a few hours...

ETA Ok, still up 20 minutes later, and so is [livejournal.com profile] yuletide!!!!!! And I have lovely gifties! An absolutely brilliant TOMORROW PEOPLE FIC and a perfectly textual bit of gorgeous Heroes RPF feat. Adrian and Milo. SO SHINY!

Off to read other fic and omg I am not going back to sleep tonight, am I?

La! Sparkly!

ETA2 Vid in any of the fandoms I've vidded before (plus Merlin and Twin Peaks) to the first person who posts a comment to this post with the correct guess at the fic I wrote for Yuletide (and there is only one - no time for treats this year).

There was a meme earlier in the week when I was sick that cheered me up a bit. Basically, people were posting photos of Jared Padalecki, and I realised that I never posted a reasonably good version of the Group Photo that I did with [livejournal.com profile] lostt1 and [livejournal.com profile] roguebitch, and a bunch of SPN cast members.
It was terrific fun, and if Kenny offers it again, I am definitely doing it again!

As the meme says... )

Why we didn't save Jared's sign for posterity is beyond me! But gah, if they do offer it again, how can we possibly top this for sheer fun?

Yuletide fic is now well past 1000 words, and I now have to write a shagging scene. Although, of course, I have never written a shagging scene in my life. I am convinced that it will be cliche-riddled, and my only hope is to make it more or less R-rated, which is still making me very wibbly and meep-ish.

Dear Yuletide Team: Thank you so much for the amazing prompt that was assigned to me today! I am so excited to write for at least two of the prompts, so yay!

Dear Yuletide Writer: Meep, I have no idea what to tell you! But I know that whatever you create, I will love it, because I pretty much love everything in the fandoms I chose!

My completely disorganized tags should give some hints as to what I like to read, and what makes me especially squee-tastic about the fandoms I've chosen. I wish I had more time to write something up tonight, but I have a ridiculously busy tomorrow and may not manage to write a comprehensive letter before the weekend. In brief, though, I like happy endings - or at least endings where there's a possibility for happiness, and I don't enjoy deathfics or graphic violence. If you end up choosing The Eight, I have to admit that I prefer Catherine/Nim to Catherine/Solarin, but I'd probably be fascinated by any mash-up of any of the characters; I have, btw, read The Fire, and I liked it, but you don't have to incorporate it at all. And I check Adrian Pasdar's YouTube account regularly. In each of the fandoms, I'm just as happy with gen as I am with romance, and I'm as happy with a PG-13 rated fic as I would be with something rated R or NC-17. Does this help? )

Keith on Prop 8, being brilliant. )

The thing that's frustrating me right now is that there still seems to be no organization between the forces behind Overturn Amendment Two in Florida and the Overturn Prop Eight in California. Ads can't be that different in the two states, and educational/informational materials shouldn't need a full rewrite to be used in both states - so why aren't they working together? Some of my friends in my neighborhood were so busy working on the Obama campaign that they didn't spend much time far in advance of the election reading up on the proposed amendments, and didn't even know about Amendment Two until they saw the sign in front of my house - and they voted against it because of the sign in front of my house. I know the locals thought it would never hit 60%, in large part because the polls all showed it coming in at 54-57%, so they spent almost no money on ads or information. How hard would it have been to situate *one* person at each early polling location in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach - okay, and Orlando, Tampa and Gainesville, too - with flyers saying Vote No On Two? It might've made a difference to 60 or 70 thousand people, and that's all we needed to turn the vote the other way.

Along those lines, I am rather proud of being Jewish right now - Jews in LA voted strongly against Prop 8 according to Loyola's exit poll - 78% voted in support of gay marriage, and 8 per cent voted against it (the balance declined to answer). That's the highest percentage of any religious group in the poll (although I can't tell if they separated out various Christian denominations because I wouldn't be surprised if the UU church was close to 78% if not higher). Still, cool amid the non-coolness of it all.

Awww, look at our adorably dorky President-Elect! )
