Today has been an absolutely magnificent perfect storm of things that are partially about fannish creativity and legal issues. Basically, within a fifteen minute time frame of my life today, I did an analysis of copyright language,  got a text that the ruling in the Google Books case was in and it was a massigve victory for Fair Use and transformative works in so many ways that can be analogized to fanfic, and *then* while I was sitting in my car tweeting about it, the Amazon delivery guy arrived with my copy of FIC: Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World (and if you haven't started Following FIC editor Anne Jamison on tumblr yet, today is the day to!).

Transformatives working... )

I got to write a Political Animals fic for [livejournal.com profile] tascioni, who asked for a fic in which TJ was happy, which let me mentally revisit Washington DC & Kramerbooks over the holidays, throw a Love Actually reference in and title it with a line from the Panic! At the Disco/fun. song C'Mon, which is the TJ and/or Jack Benjamin Song of my Heart.

It's technically mature (Yes! I wrote shagging!!) and it's TJ/Sean Reeves, and you can find it here

What Would My Head Be Like?
Not a coffee shop AU, but there is coffee, a shop, TJ and Sean. And it's Christmas once again.

(Oh, and does anyone know what PA or other comms I can post to?)

No, I didn't do NanoWriMo or even NaBloPoMo, but someone on my flist asked yesterday whether there was anything we would want to change in the HP books, now that it's all said and done. And of course, I'm sure everyone has things - big and little, world-changing and world-tweaking - that they would have done differently; I'm curious as to what y'all would have changed or expanded upon.

For me, there are tiny tweaks - to the way Hedwig died, to some aspects of Tonks' characterization, to Draco's hairline in the Epilogue - but I wouldn't want to change anything significantly. There is, however, one thing that I've always wanted, and had really weirdly hoped to see in the film even though it wasn't in the books - a soul-less Barty Crouch stuck in a corner somewhere.

So finally, I wrote the one-paragraph drop-in drabble that I would've loved to see in Deathly Hallows (and am considering trying to organize it as a Challenge in the new year):

Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: G
Characters: Barty Crouch, Jr.
Summary: A 100-word drop-in to Deathly Hallows that would've changed nothing, but would look really good on screen.

Harry was surprised to see a blank-eyed Barty Crouch, Jr. standing like a cloak-rack off by the wall nearest the Slytherin table. There were four hats piled on his head, three cloaks on each arm and a massive bag at his feet. The Death Eaters seemed to be using him to hold their stuff while they battled Hogwarts' defenders. How many years ago had Sirius told Harry that wizards could live without a soul, but Harry had never expected to see the aftereffects of a Dementor attack in the Great Hall. Someone, Harry thought fleetingly, must be feeding him regularly.

Title: Wish Away
Gift Fic for [livejournal.com profile] bimosexual in [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas
Prompt: J2 AU set to the basic plotline of Ever After…cuz yes I am just that cool; or if unfamiliar with the movie any story in which one of the boys is the supposed wealthy/superior 'prince' type, and the other is the poor/inferior pauper but love conquers all and…what not)
Summary: An adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation. Jared Padalecki contends with his stepfather, Lord Fredric Lehane, and tries to rescue the family business - but how will Prince Jensen change his life? AU
Part one of five - the next four parts should be posted over the next few weeks, and it should be complete by Valentine's Day.
Rating PG-13.
Pairing: Eventual Jared/Jensen
Disclaimers: Not mine, never happened, total AU, ideally transformative. Some lines in this chapter are taken directly from the script of Ever After. The title is from a line in "Ever Ever After" by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

Ever ever after? It may only be a wish away )

And yes, I know that this is a pretty insane time to post an SPN fic. Show has just aired in half the country and is about to air in the other half, and I want to take some time to rant about the evil bitch(es) who did the one thing you do not do to anyone in fandom - namely, send links to their fannish activity, includng art or fic (whether it's rated G or NC-17)) to their family or RL friends - or (does it even need to be said?) to their offices.

Whoever did this? You are evil. Someone did this to me years ago and it still makes me ill to think about it, to remember how it felt to sit in my office and worry that I was going to be fired because the law firm I worked for suddenly knew I wrote fanfic. I was lucky - there were no negative consequences. But that's a one in a million chance and almost no other workplace would be so kind.

Have not yet seen Show. Had a long meeting tonight, and may not get to see it until the morning. Please do not spoil me! Thanks!

For my first time participating, this turned out to be a fascinating, phenomenal experience. I wrote Heroes RPF for the first time, as a gift for [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal, who requested Adrian Pasdar/Jack Coleman, and said, "You will be my friend forever if you can put together the hotness of Pasdar and Coleman. Mention of sig others and angst are no problem. (By all means throw Natalie in there.) I'm not a big Adrian/Milo shipper, but if it's part of your fanon, I can live with it as long as I get the Jack/Adrian smut."

I've never written smut, but I got somewhat close with Loose Tongue (title from a Neil Finn song), wherein Milo is jumping on the bandwagon and making a few anti-Prop-8 short films, and one's going to feature Adrian and Jack. It's rated R and you can read it here.

So many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] roguebitch, [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace and [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose for beta and [livejournal.com profile] mijan and [livejournal.com profile] jlh for sensationally inspirational cheerleading.

Definitely participating again next year.

One of the nifty things about this year is that it brought me back in touch with [livejournal.com profile] tptigger, who I first met probably ten-plus years ago on the Tomorrow People mailing list - she wrote the adorable Panic In the Disco tomorrow people fic for me. And thanks, as well, to [livejournal.com profile] vampedvixen for the wonderful Adrian/Milo fic, The Subtext Is Rapidly Becoming Text. It was adorable and spot-on.

I've never done one of these before - probably because I've never created this many fanworks in all the time I've been on LJ. I did most of my fanfic writing back in 2000 and the firt half of 2001, and then did maybe an additional 10,000 words in the five years that followed. This year, though, I discovered a love for drabbling post-episode of shows I loved, and a bit of an obsession with vidding, so I finally can do My Fan Creativity Year in Review )
